Very minor theft from Outbuildings: Curious?
Discussion
Bit of an odd one this and I am describing it in case any of you have experienced something similar.
Not sure we are being 'cased' for a more detailed job..
At the botttom of our land we have sizeable old barn, it is many things, old stables, garage, workshop etc.
This afternoon on entering I noticed that a rear door I have never been able to open since we moved in 12 years ago was wide open. This faces away from the barn and invisible from the house.
I had a look around, a car stored there had its door open. ... on entering the workshop.. I noted boxes, trunks and drawers had been opened... even old tobacco tins full of screws..despite the myriad of power tools; Makita, Bosch etc the only things missing were a small silver pen knife and an S.T. Dupont Lighter.
In there are also the lawn tractors.. I noted the ignition on on one of them... but all the keys were missing from the other 3?
I have since double secured and battened down the doors.
Strange 'light' burglary.... thoughts anyone?

Agree, although it's interesting that they could open the door that the OP couldn't.Sensible suggestion: put one of those Ring doorbell thingies on it so it records any visitors.
Less sensible suggestion: put some sweets around the place - perhaps they'll settle for those if they come back.

Thanks Chaps...
Still thinking about this...it would have taken considerable force to get the door open.. I had to sledgehammer it back into the frame.
Ring doorbell/ Similar solution a good call.
You can now get outdoor ring contact sensors for doors and gates. I have one down on my front gate that raises an alert when opened. They are about £40 a sensor but well worth it and do work quite a distance from the house, especially if you have a range extender.Still thinking about this...it would have taken considerable force to get the door open.. Mine are programmed in to work with Alexa, so if the gate opens Alexa will say one of a few phrases such as 'A stranger, from the outside. Oooooooh' and 'Danger Danger Will Robinson'

I do hope you run around waving your arms when that one gets announced.
It has been done....
I am forever finding new ways to irritate the other half with it. Somewhat fortunately the gate doesn't get opened that often as a postie is a rare sight in these parts. Was thinking of adding 'ahh bugger it's your mother' but it might go off when she's here

It actually went in as we had a guy who had some mental issues who would come onto the property at night and just wander. Installed the sensor on a Wednesday and he turned up at 3am on the Thursday morning so it worked well. Turning the light on spooks him so he left. Not actually seen him for a while so think he might have been sectioned. Pretty impressed with it.
I’ve got a blink outdoor camera on the outside of my garage (it’s about 100 yards away down the garden) and I’ve got one of the powered Blink mini cameras which is hidden in a dark top corner inside - hopefully after removing the outside camera, defeating the alarm and getting in then any potential ne-er do wells will drop their guard and I’ll get footage of them plus audio.
So far no scrotes though; just sheep, badgers, deer, foxes and cats.

I would say kids but often rural burglaries start with a exploration mission prior to the main offence.
Rural/ farm buildings can be a full of treasures or a waste of time - they will scope out in a legit vehicle so if stopped by the cops they can try and style it out and then return in a nicked/pool van to empty any worthwhile properties.
Also consider if its being scoped for a rave - they love a big barn

Sounds like it.Anyone having a look around intending to come back and clear you out wouldn't have left the door open and taken something minor, alerting you to the fact they'd been there.
I've had the same in the past - random stuff nicked... one bottle of wine (out of a hundred available), bolt cutters (later found a mile away) and stuff gone through.
Annoyingly the wine was a decent year.

one of my rented lockups got broken into a couple of years ago and I only realised because the windscreen wipers had been nicked off my sons Skoda Citigo that was in there. I moved the car out as a precaution and they apparently were unimpressed when they came back for another go as they set the garage on fire and burnt down the entire block. The car was on my drive a mile away.
