"Valve has confirmed that they are dropping support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 from their Steam gaming client on January 1st 2024, stating that the platform's newest features and planned security updates will require PC gamers to move to newer versions of Windows."

"Currently, less than 2% of Steam users run Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 on their systems, making Valve's planned dropping of support for these OS' a non-issue for most PC gamers."

Just in case anyone on here still hasn't updated or are running an older OS for other software reasons.

Phew - read that as 'Win10' initially. That would have been a very bad move by Valve.

Sad to see Win7 support go - MS really killed that OS off to get Win10 adopted by the masses. It was one of their best.

Windows 7 has been out of support for three years. Windows 8 support was stopped in January this year. Windows 10 is coming up for 8 years old.

There is no reason for anybody to still be on old, insecure versions of Windows and many, many reasons to force people to upgrade.

My Windows 7 laptop works perfectly.

I play old games.

I don't want to buy a new machine.

I can't afford to buy a new machine.

I don't want to throw my old machine out

I collect old machines.

I need 32bit for old USB devices that don't work on my desktop Win11 machine.

I'm tight.

My laptop also has serial which I need.

(Yes have virtualbox too, yes it works fine, no that's not a good enough reason, I like physical old hardware, I'm sad, I'm happy)

That's a shame.

I use an old windows 8 laptop when away from home to play old / indie games. I guess I'll have to keep it offline and not add anymore games to it.

bks.

Now I have to upgrade my PC.

Unless Steam are going to give me a full refund on everything in my library.

Does Win10 not run on your laptop?

Nope.

Edit - I'm confusing it with Windows 11. Looks like I can update it.
