Today I saw a Police HGV tractor unit on the motorway, never seen one before. What is their purpose?

This one was pulled up in the hard shoulder behind an articulated HGV, with a Police van in front of that. The Police HGV had disguised blue lights in its rear wheel arches and blue lights in the front grill. No other markings of lights were visible.

Enforcement of commercial vehicle (can look in at what other LGV drivers are doing when behind the wheel such as on the phone, watching a movie, poring themselves a Scotch) & pulling trailers that can be mobile control rooms etc.

They can see into the cabs of other HGVs and catch drivers using phones, tablets, cooking, etc.

Caught other HGV driver, I believe. Like seat belt and phone etc

HGV sitting very high up, the usual Insignia/5 estate even the X5 will not be able to see what the HGV driver doing

They’ve been around for an age. They are also used for the usual car/van driving offences too( seatbelts/phones/shaving at the wheel) for the same reasons that most people never give them a second look. A useful tool against the hard of thinking.

It’s really good they have them. I don’t massively like the thought of a HGV driven by a driver also watching tv etc.
