About 6 months and 6000 miles ago, I had my Griffith 500 serviced at Tower View Race Services. It was a very expensive service at 1800 quid and involved them changing the manifold gaskets to cure a ticking noise. I have no problems with any of the work they did and the ticking noise went away.

On the way home from Tower View to Bournemouth, the ticking noise started to reappear. This gradually got worse and was diagnosed as a cam problem. About 4 months and 4000 miles ago, I took the car to V8 Developments and had the cam changed along with some other bits, spending another 1200 quid.

In the last 48 hours, the car has developed a terrible metallic tapping noise, much worse than anything before and in my opinion, a definite metal against metal contact. It's like a mini pneumatic drill under the bonnet.

It doesn't do it when it's cold then as it warms up it starts to do it at about 3000rpm and as it gets hot it does it all the time, even at idle. Definately a top end noise and sounds like it's coming from the middle of the V.

The local dealer (Westovers) kindly came round to have a listen but could not say for sure what the problem was, he suggested either a cam problem or a manifold crack (not convinced about the manifold crack).

What should I do? As the dealer came to my house to have a listen, I would feel a bit unconfortable about not letting them fix or at least investigate the problem. However, if it's the cam gone, the replacement cam was obviously faulty and V8 Developments should fix it. If it is the manifold gaskets, Tower View should fix it.

I really can't afford to pay twice to have something fixed but I can't drive the car to V8 or even Tower View as it sounds VERY serious.

What does the list suggest?

Ian - my commiserations but here are some suggestions:
- have the AA/RAC/whoever transport your car to V8 Developments or Tower View.
- have your local dealer investigate the cause, but if the problem is found to be related to any of the work previously carried out get an agreement from the relevant party to either pay for the rectification or put it right themselves (including sorting out transporting the car if necessary).
- see if Tower View/V8 Developments can travel to check out the car.

I had the same problem with my 500 Griff and it turned out to be the bolts for the oil pickup in the sump loosened themselves. Tightened them up and was then ok. Have you noticed oil pressure dropping off at all?

Nope, if anything it's slightly too high. Needs changing.

Looks like I'll have to get it to V8 Developments some how.
