I've just started playing Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 and I have to wonder how much better a PS5 version would be.

Does anyone think the upgrade isn't worth it, at the moment at least?

FWIW I don't have a 4K tv for PS4.

If your man maths is strong, decide what you value your time at as an hourly rate.

A PS5 will massively reduce the loading times of fast travel and so on.

It'll soon add up... hehe

If you use the PS for anything else, switching to youtube or what have you, browing the Playstation Store, it's all enormously faster on the PS5 as well.

Totally right with all this, i'm on the Xbox side rather than Playstation but the jump from original shape Xbox One to Xbox Series X is like night and day. Assassin's Creed Valhalla took over a minute for fast travel on the One, probably less than ten seconds on Series X. Like SturdyHSV rightly says, it all soon adds up

Another Xbox user but for me it would depend if a 4K TV upgrade was on the cards.

I already had the 4K TV so to me the Series X is worth it. A Plague Tale: Requiem for example looks stunning, as did Forza Horizon.

You also have a current gen media centre for all your streaming 4K content, which loads very quickly (and generally very quietly) with the ability to be paired easily to decent Bluetooth headphones. You also have access to a 4K blu ray player.

If none of the above applies, then its a very expensive upgrade with minimal gains.

I got a Series X 2 years ago now but I still haven't got round to getting a PS5. Games that come out on new and old platforms aren't usually worth upgrading for, I think I'll probably get one for Death Stranding 2.

I do have a 4K TV for mine (albeit a Samsung with the worst HDR you've ever seen in your life biggrin ) so there is that benefit but for me personally i thought it worth upgrading even without one. No, you won't get the full benefit but the SSD is worth more to me than 4K is. But that's different folks different strokes isn't it

I've just upgraded my PS4 pro to a PS5 I use an LG 4K OLED the reason was that bloody fan noise. At least the PS5 is quieter but not silent I can hear a fan it's very faint and I can live with it.
On World of Warships Legends, Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Ghost Recon Breakout the loading is more or less instant compared to the 4.
Overall I think there is an improvement in the picture quality.
My XBox One X went wrong so also bought a new Xbox X mainly because Age Of Empires is available on the new machine. I also bought Ghost Recon because it was on a cheap offer.
I can't really see any difference in either to be honest although the new Xbox is silent.
I still prefer the PS5 controller though.

Just to add in my mancave I have a full surround sound system and the Dolby Atmos is a big plus for the Xbox over the PS5.
I concluded that if the noise of the fan annoys you as much as it did me the PS5 is an improvement

I would say so. Certainly the PS5 only games are faster and nicer looking etc.

Worth it IMO.

The capabilities re: lighting handling are a marked step up from the PS4, and it is so much quicker loading in.

And it doesn't sound like a cross-Channel hovercraft is in the room with you lol

Consider keeping the PS4 for your existing games library and think about moving to PC for the future.
Much cheaper games, much more flexible in what you can do with it, wider choice of games, infinitly expandable with future games compatibility ensured.
You can stream the games to your TV from the PC, to keep the 'console' experience.

Downsides are that you will need to invest more than the cost of a PS5 if you want to build a decent new PC from scratch. Also, if you don't really know much about tech and don't feel you want to spend time to learn, it may not be for you. You have to put in a little effort to get a good setup whereas consoles are always ready to go out of the box with no additional work needed.

I was in a smilar situation of moving from PS4 Pro to PS5 and thanks to the lack of PS5s out there, decided to go all-in on my PC instead (had a half decent one anyway). I upgraded the CPU, GPU and memory and bought a good monitor and very happy I did. Sooooo much better than being tied into a console infrastructure and such a wide variety of games with really good deals out there constantly from the various digital stores. Mostly play the games on my telly over Steamlink or Moonlight client apps, just like a console. Also stream really high quality PCVR games to my Quest2 headset. as well has having a nice G9 monitor for 'sit in front the the desk' type games.

Defo worth upgrading. Then you just need to budget for a 2nd controller as the battery life is crap, then for a 2TB SSD upgrade as the standard one gets filled up pretty quickly! So that's half the price again on top of the ps5. Luckily they were delivered when the mrs was out!thumbup

You can just plug the controller into the wall with a usb charger thing and keep playing.

The problem is that there is no sign of a cheaper, smaller, better looking slim for a year at the least.

I have kept my PS4 Pro because of the large library of 'digital' games I bought for it .. something I now regret. All current and future purchases are PC only (Steam games, preferably).

I was waiting for a "slim" mid life update PS5 before buying but as I said earlier Death Stranding 2 might force my hand. Saying that, I've got so many games to play on Xbox that I may just leave it. Ended up skipping a PS generation before because of that, never had a PS3. Which is annoying as the only MGS game I haven't played is 4 and it has so far not appeared for PS4.

When my current Mac dies, I may well switch to PC. Microsoft seem to have improved their tools significantly over the past 10 years and I'm still find the Mac a pain in some areas.

Thanks guys. Once I'm done with GT7, I may well sell the game and racing setup to fund the PS5.

Um, the old games can be played on the PS5?

And quite a few have had "updates" to get them to 60FPS and improved graphics on the PS5 - such as Far Cry 5.
