I’m sure it’s nothing to do will spending budgets but our Highways are salting the roads again tonight. It’s been a lovely sunny day, the roads are bone dry and the forecast doesn’t dip below 2 degrees all night and it’s plus 5 at 8am tomorrow. Surely people can drive safely in those conditions.

people can barely drive safely in perfect summery conditions let alone other times frown I do wonder however why we don't use cinder like quite a few states in Canada and the US seem to do...

They can’t afford to fix potholes but do seem to be generous with the gritting this year.

Arse covering.

While it's been a lovely afternoon, the conditions tonight are perfect for a dew to form on everything overnight; clear skies, temperature dropping, relatively high humidity, light wind. Given the forecast air temperature is down to around freezing in some places, the road surfaces will likely drop below freezing; suddenly there's a potential for ice. The council want to cover their arses incase somebody has an accident on a patch of black ice.

I'm leaving the house at 0500 tomorrow morning and I'm half expecting a frost on the windscreen. I can see why they're gritting, although it's annoying as hell as there's no meaningful rain forecast in the short term to wash it all away, it's just going to sit and linger. Dreadful stuff.

The overnight forecast didn't dip below freezing last night in Chesterfield but it was -1.2C outside earlier and I heard a windscreen being cleared of frost.

I'm near the centre of town, I imagine more exposed locations will have been even colder.

Whereabouts are you, out of interest? Nothing down in Beds this morning and I subscribe to the council gritting alert emails.

Prehaps some genius has told them that if they spread enough salt, it’ll eventually fill the millions of pot holes?

No gritting email from Central Beds council so far tonight. Fingers crossed it stays that way…

Has anyone else’s local authority sent gritters out?

I agree, this bugs me too. Hateful stuff and there isn't supposed to be any cash about but it's to mitigate some self important plank driving a 3 ton SUV way above the speed for the conditions and spinning off and blaming anyone but themselves.

Yes, Hampshire are gritting again tonight, according to their twitter feed. I think most councils are becoming evermore risk averse. Yet having said that, they seem to take ages to fill some extremely severe potholes which I imagine could be far more dangerous to many road users than a touch of frost.

No salt in Beds or Cambs overnight, fortunately. I’m surprised!
