Hi all,

looking for some advice, on 19th March 2022 I purchased a Motorola G50 5G from Argos for my partners birthday, shes had the phone for a year and done nothing but moan about it (as she does with every phone), it went back to Motorola repair centre a few weeks ago for a new screen and they noted it that its a "Motorola G50" not "Motorola G50 5G" which tallies up with why her new case she has just ordered for it doesn't fit.

G50

G50 5G

Motorola have confirmed the normal G50 does have 5G capability which isn't the issue here, its that I have been miss sold a device.

I've called Argos this morning and they have confirmed the order was for a Motorola G50 5G.

Do I have a case? Obviously I know its been a year.

I'd have thought the issue might be proving that the phone you have is the one they supplied.

Is the IMEI or serial number, etc., on the paperwork?

Yes I advise you that the advice you have been given seems to indicate you have a case . The best advice is to advise Argos of the advice you got, and advise them of your consumer rights.

Looking at the specs, there isn't much in it? If your wife isn't happy with that one she's unlikely to have been happy with the one called "5G".
At the end of the day they are both relatively cheap smartphones. Depends how much effort you want to make complaining.

Argos should probably put right the wrong case issue as they caused it. Can't see that you've suffered any other loss?

Problem I have at the moment, is when I go into my Argos account and click on the order, it wont open it up. Because its an old order now.

So yeh at the moment I have no proof that the IMEI etc is the one they supplied.

Yeh there isn't much in it really. Just a case of them mis selling really. I'll complain and see what they say.

Could it have been a mistake when the order was picked?

Do I have a case?
Yes, but as you say, it doesn’t fit.

I suspect they only had the G50 but were selling it as a G50 5G.

Anyway Argos customer services have been on to me today so will see how it progresses.

It's a 'motorola G50' 5G phone.
Not a 'motorola G50 5G' phone.

The way Argos describe the phones they offer, they would probably be indistinguishable in the dogalogue.
Unless you check the manufacturer's part number.
Or the EAN which Argos tend to list.
Did they list it with the right EAN?

It's just Motormower's bonkers idea of having two near identical models with one having a suffix in its name, colliding with the Argos catalogue system.
Today they offer:
SIM Free Nokia X30 5G 128GB Mobile Phone - Cloudy Blue124/2836
Which Nokia call 'X30' not 'X30 5G'.

Many mobile phones have identical model numbers/names covering different versions, intended for different markets.
Some phones are customised to cover different GSM, LTE and 5G sub bands.
Also some models of phone may change considerably during their product lifecycle.
I think this is less of an issue than it used to be, but personally I would be wary of getting a cheap import for instance.

Is the difference between the two models significant?
Does the '5G' do anything better?
Do you have a UK model?

Personally I don't think you have a strong case, especially after a year, but Argos are IMHO quite generous with return so you can only ask.

Fiance, but she would probably cancel the wedding if I gave her an iPhone!

We are an Android only household, actually extended family as well. The only iPhone we have is my work iPhone XR which is literally used for calls/text/emails and teams.

Imagine what she would do if you came home drunk one night with lipstick all over your face.

Totally O/T but I once bought a miniature, LED, Christmas tree from Argos as a cheeky Up Yours to a mates girlfriend who said she wouldn't come round with him at Christmas unless I had a tree up! ( I 'kin hate Christmas) Got home and opened the box, No 'Kin Tree!! Tried ringing them and it just rang, and rang, and rang. Got in the car thinking, "They'll never believe this! frown As soon as I walked into Argos I could see the staff behind the counter pointing and laughing, they were expecting me! The guy who'd picked it had taken it out of the box to check it looked ok and forgot to put it back in before he put the box on the conveyor, (this was 20+ years ago). Got distracted by something or other and I got the result biglaugh

Anyway, I don't get this hatred for iPhones! Had them as company phones since they came out and got my own iPhone 8 as a 'reconditioned, as new, guaranteed, for £250 during lockdown, from GiffGaff. £10pm payg! Never been let down by one! Wouldn't pay a grand for one but won't change this one 'till they stop supporting it! Then I'll try GG again.

Argos customer services have said that due to a supplier issue their record show that they substituted the device for a similar model and therefore will issue a full refund!
