I have a 2005 Monaro which has covered about 800 miles.
At the weekend I twice got a rather loud noise from under the car. On both occassions it happened after a good run, when manouvering the car almost on full lock at low speeds. I can only describe the noise as a rather deep pitched metallic 'twang twang' sound.

Bells V8, you recently mentioned a clunking noise when locking the steering wheel which turned out to be a problem with the springs. From my (rather poor) description does it sound like it could be the same noise?

To be honest it felt like it came from a little further back than the front wheels. A nearby road has just been resurfaced and my initial thought was that some loose stones had got wedged under the car somewhere and were just pinging free as the car flexed, but now I'm not so sure.

Any other Monaro owners experienced anything similar, or does anyone have any ideas?

Otherwise I'll see if I get the same problem next weekend and contact the dealer.

Cheers,

Neil

If was a little further back still, would suggest might just be diff noise.

I wonder if its the power assisted steering pump?
Apprently many cars make a similar noise, both our Fords do (Scorpio & Puma) and have done since new.

Have had them checked by 2 dealers and both pronounced them fine and dandy and that they "all do that Sir"

The Scorp now has 93k on it and steers just fine still.

mines done this a couple of times, like you say its a very loud metallic twanging noise from the from of the car. I put it down to the springs turning on the seats, but I havent had a look yet, and nothings fallen off.......

I've had this with another type of car. A squealing noise at full lock was low pas fluid and the pas pump working really hard.

A clunking noise was the front springs having stiction as the struts rotated then they spring free. A cure was copper grease or needle rollers.

If you don't think it is from the front, i would be inclined to look at the diff.

Its not uncommon for the LSD in the diff to lock up at low speeds which as you turn will wind up the driveshafts. The "twang" is the wind up in the shafts being released as the LSD is overcome.

I had this very same problem in my ute. By the time i got round to sorting it out, the oil was black (lots of iron particles). Refilled the diff with Redline oil with a friction modifier and problem was solved.

If it is the diff, it will need doing soon!

Hope this helps

M'mmm. That was probably a poor explanation of LSD and diff function.

More accurately, the LSD sometimes locks up when turning at very low speeds, thus causing the driveshaft wind up.

Thanks for the ideas chaps. I'll see if I can reproduce the noise at the weekend and pin down more precisely where it's coming from.

Cheers,

Neil
