Goodwood Revival to honour Carroll Shelby

The American motorsport icon would have been 100 this year - Revival will pay tribute | Promoted

There’s arguably nothing more evocative at a Goodwood Revival weekend than watching AC Cobras being wrestled around the Motor Circuit as part of the RAC TT Celebration, their mighty V8s locked in an hour-long battle with just two rear tyres. It’s truly spectacular motorsport, especially if you’re lucky enough to soak up some late summer sunshine as well. It seems fitting, then, that the father of the AC Cobra, Carroll Shelby, will be Goodwood’s honoured driver for the Revival in 2023 , the year he would have turned 100.

While Shelby is best remembered for the cars he created, his racing exploits are legendary as well - ‘honoured driver’ isn’t a misnomer. In fact, he competed in one of Goodwood’s most famous races, winning the 1959 RAC Tourist Trophy in an Aston DBR1 alongside Stirling Moss and Jack Fairman. That victory secured Aston Martin the World Sportscar Championship for that year.

Even when he was no longer racing, Shelby and Goodwood remained linked - a Daytona Coupe won the 1964 TT - so it only seems right that Revival will celebrate the great man this year. Expect some of the most important cars from Shelby’s career on track, including his first MG TC race car. It promises to be quite the display.

That’s not all for this year’s Revival, as Lotus’s 75th anniversary will also be in the spotlight. Another brand with incredible Goodwood history (including the Motor Circuit F1 lap record), Lotus will be celebrated with a spectacular display of cars: F1 racers including the Lotus 18, trials machines and even Colin Chapman’s own Lotus Elan. His son Clive, of Classic Team Lotus, said: “Goodwood represents many landmarks in the story of Lotus. We had many famous victories - often with my father behind the wheel - when the Circuit was first in operation and, since the Revival and Members’ Meetings were established, Lotus has played a significant role in these glorious events… As Lotus Cars experiences an extraordinary period of growth and develops into a global brand for the future, it is the perfect time to celebrate our history in such splendid style.”

Moreover, this being Revival, it’s not just cars to see at Goodwood come September. Following an exciting debut in 2022, Revive & Thrive, the event’s strikingly relevant mantra, will make a return in 2023, this time headlined by heritage craft and restoration expert Dominic Chinea. The upcycling expo brings a new dimension to the event and includes workshops and demonstrations on how to cherish our belongings for a longer life, rather than junking them for new ones. Works for old cars, after all…

Should be another superb Revival weekend, then. And while it might not be the Goodwood event on your mind with Members’ Meeting and Festival of Speed still to come, it’s April already - summer will be here before we know, and then it’ll be Revival time. Best get some tickets and your best vintage outfit sorted for 8th-10th September as soon as possible, especially with the early bird discount only available until 30 April.

Given that the first "Revival" was held in 1998, I do wonder whether one day these excellent meetings might be renamed "Continuation". Surely any necessary "reviving" has been done.

Shelby was also a Le Mans winner, driving with Roy Salvadori in 1959.

I also see that Shelby are producing their first EV to 'celebrate' Carroll Shelby's centenary. He must be turning in his grave. If you want a laugh watch this 7 minute review -

You will note that this load of rubbish "is not being sold in the USA as EV uptake has not been as rapid as in Europe". In other words they are less controlled by their idiot WEF controlled woke governments and the useless bureaucrats of the EU.

By contrast, just to show there is hope, watch this -
