Hello all,

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Yesterday, eastbound between junctions 5 and 7 - gantry with HADECS 3 camera alongside showing 60 limit. Slowed down to 58 well in advance along with all those around me, yet the camera still flashed twice when I went through and also flashed those behind me.

I have driven this stretch of motorway twice a day for the last 10 years, but since the implementation of the smart cameras I have seen them going off regularly, capturing vehicles clearly travelling under the posted speed limit. Looking at the reported problems on the National Highways website, there are dozens of similar complaints with many actually receiving notices of intended prosecution claiming that the variable speed limit at the time was lower than it actually was.

This is not the first time I have been flashed while under the limit - it happened a few weeks ago travelling westbound at 65mph, however that was only a single flash which is considerably less worrying than a double flash.

I shall obviously be appealing if I receive a notice of intended prosecution, however with no dashcam footage there is no way to prove that the variable limit at the time was 60 if they claim otherwise. I am aware that cameras do sometimes randomly flash to calibrate etc, but being a double flash I am less confident that this was the case.

Anyway, just wanted to vent and ask if anyone else had encountered this? There are clearly issues with the cameras on this stretch of motorway, evidenced by the multiple reports made to the Highways Agency and also by what I have personally witnessed!

I'm off to buy a dashcam...

im local too and regualry drive on the M27 several times a day, as I'm out and about for work .

ive been flashed at an indercated 75mph (about 71mph gps) in my van. nothing came of it. ive also seen the cameras flashing alot. with no one obvoulsy going over the limit.
I regularly drive on the 'smart' part of the M3 and I rarly see the cameras flash there. so it does seem unique to the M27 . ive not herd of anyone getting a ticket though. I thought they take a photo of the signs as well as your speed for referance?

while were ranting, why is lane 3 the new middle lane ? the lane discipline, is ludicrusly bad at the moment. I can regularly go from fareham to fareham west in lane 1 at the posted limit. even the trucks sit out in lane 2

sorry I dont have an answer but id be interesed to know.

If you look at the gantry with the speed cameras on, there are an additional set of cameras about 80m before the speed camera. Part of the evidence package against you, will also include an image from this camera of the illuminated sign as you’re passing under. This is why you won’t receive a ticket if you weren’t over the posted limit.

Don't they sometimes flash "randomly" for calibration purposes? Assuming you haven't got a nip yet

Judging by the need to vent, I assume you had a NIP with a false speed on it. Maybe chill and let us know if that actually happens...

M27 speed cameras are weird I've never seen ones like them.
Many of them seem to be on signs at the side rather than gantries crossing the motorway showing limits above each lane.

A lot of people have mentioned being flashed for no reason, the explanation given has been maybe it's been for lane closures, but I was on it a couple of weeks ago and saw it happening with traffic that seemed to be well within the limit and no lanes closed.
