Hi all. I’ve currently got two cars insured with the same insurer and when I bought the second car they mirrored the no claims discount.

The first car’s policy is coming up for renewal and I want to make a minor modification by adding a small boot spoiler from a main dealer. However my insurer doesn’t seem to cover ‘modified’ cars, so if I leave them for a company that’s happy with the spoiler, what would happen to the no claims discount on the second car? Would that get reduced or would it be left intact? Both policies state 18 years no claims discount on them

Get in touch with A-Plan in Thatcham.

They will mirror the NCD & specialise in modified cars.

I had a similar situation when wanting to move my 86 to much lower cost insurance, I just asked for proof of NCB and they provided one. They didn't care that my wife's car was still insured with them on max NCB.

I’ve found that adding a car (or bike) with a new policy and getting a mirrored or “introductory” NCB gives you that NCB and proof thereof on renewal.

For instance a couple of years ago I bought an Alfa 159 in October. I rang my insurers who kindly gave me 5 years NCB on it. Come renewal the next year I changed insurers and got a proof of NCB of six years.

Nice trick as I want to get another car could I mirror 10 years from my main car?

They didn’t give me a full ncb, but 5 years was pretty good. And I did get a proper proof of ncb for that car too.

No - I changed all three from the same insurer to different ones.

I had mirrored no claims (10 years) when I renewed the one I moved insurers, now have 2 policies with 2 different companies each gets a letter each year with that car regs no claims, no issues so far.

As above. Find a decent insurer that will "mirror" NCB. Do 12 months and the renewal should come through with a stated NCB on the notice. If not, get written confirmation.

A Plan were great for me, but I think Adrian Flux, Admiral Bewiser and LV will all mirror your current vehicle.

We went from 2 cars to 4 over a couple of years. After 12 months we had 6 years NCB as a minimum on every vehicle.

Just to update, I spoke to my current insurer and they won’t insure the main car if I add the spoiler so I’ll be finding a new company for that, but the mirrored no claims discount for the second car is unaffected so I have two cars with 18 years no claims.

Also it’s worth doing your renewals well in advance as some prices have gone up massively over a couple of weeks. I was thinking of going with LV on a multi car policy and now the renewal is fast approaching the quote for one car is now almost as high as it was for both a couple of weeks ago

It takes some playing at. Some insurers won't entertain it and will price you for 0 NCB. This comes back with some pretty hilarious quotes.

Once you find those who mirror, you can then play the game.

Similar in some ways getting them to cover "company car" NCB. I had to look around for a while with that one, once I had my own motor.

You will always find someone to cover your situation.
