Aston reveals stunning DBS 770 Ultimate Volante

Already sold out, but who's going to pass up the chance to gawp at this?

Aston Martin had confirmed that a Volante would join the DBS 770 Ultimate coupe back when the model was announced in January. By and large, we knew what to expect. Before even seeing it, we’d been told the Volante was sold out. But as the end of the line special for one of Aston’s more memorable creations of the past few years, it’d be remiss not to bring the finished car to your attention. Because, well, look - it’s sensational.

In any form, the DBS has always been a truly wonderful Aston Martin, perhaps especially as a Volante with unfettered access to the V12. Of course there was always going to be an Ultimate Volante. Remember, too, that this will be the rarer of the pair, with just 199 made against 300 Coupes. All of them have buyers, unsurprisingly, because how many more opportunities will there be to get new Aston Martins like this?

The Volante carries over many of the upgrades that marked out the 770, with a 25 per cent increase in lateral stiffness up front (said to benefit steering feel), recalibrated dampers, a quicker shifting automatic and the new front end look. Plus, well, 770hp as well, said to make the Volante capable of more than 200mph. 211mph, to be exact. Or, in one of the more florid lines ever used to hint at a car’s top speed: ‘Prowling the precipice of the possible before pouncing on speeds north of 200mph’. Right.

Course the Ultimate is going to sound epic, but Aston can do way better than just epic. ‘DBS 770 Ultimate Volante puts you in the eye of a storm of sound. Note after note. Wave after wave of unadulterated V12. Nothing to muffle or dampen. Not even a roof. A sky-bound symphony surrounding the driver with the deep and seething sounds of twelve cylinders. An open-air orchestra searing up your spine, thundering all five senses on full volume. Putting you equally out in the open and at the heart of one of the most visceral experiences in the automotive world.’ So, yeah, new V12 Aston Martin is going to sound superb. Make the most of them while you can, folks.

Aston’s Chief Technical Officer was a little more reserved in his assessment than the marketing people, if still enthusiastic: “DBS 770 Ultimate Volante is the most powerful DBS in our history, and includes a comprehensive suite of enhancements to the transmission, steering, suspension, and underbody structure. It produces a spectacular level of performance and delivers one of the greatest sensory experiences when driving an open-top Super GT.”

Sounds like 199 very lucky people are going to receive a fantastic Volante. Perhaps some are getting both coupe and cabrio. Those of us who didn’t make the list can be consoled by having the Ultimate on the Aston configurator - good job trying to make it look better than this - and, of course, checking out the PH classifieds for Volantes that cost less than the £337,000 Ultimate. Purple suits this one down to the ground…

Aston needs to work on its grille treatment. I know these engines need MASSIVE cooling (high power and hot turbos) but they look like basking sharks. All of them.

Telling that they haven’t released any pictures of the dash/interior. This is what you actually spend all of your time looking at as an owner and it’s unfortunately desperately behind its peers in this ‘feel good’ area. Lets hope the upcoming revamp finally sorts this…..

Lovely looking barge indeed, I like the wheels even if they are slightly unusual.

I find AM's recent design language the same as many other manufacturers (unpalatable) but this seems to be a step away from that, looks really quite nice.

Classic AM design but modernised, without being obnoxious and trying to go 50 years into the future.

‘DBS 770 Ultimate Volante puts you in the eye of a storm of sound. "

The eye is a region of mostly calm weather at the centre of tropical cyclones.

So the 770 is very quiet then!

DBS Volantes are lovely, and this looks even lovelier.... BUT, having spent some time in a Volante I don't see as how they've addressed the two biggest problems with the car:

1. The interior. It's crap for a car of this price point
2. The boot on the Volante is ridiculously small, meaning that the car's raison d'être of being a fast continental cruiser is negated by the fact that you can't get much more than a pair of swimming trunks and a bottle of sun lotion in it. Yes of course you can put your luggage on the back seats if you REALLY want to...

Absolutely gorgeous.

Don’t care if the interior feels somewhat dated. I mean just look at it, it’s unbelievably stunning.

Yeah absolutely fantastic looking.

Agree with the wheels though, bit busy for a car that looks so sleek.

I could live with the wheels, they look lightweight from a known brand, only washing/cleaning those looks like a lot of work... biggrin
the bees would love them though.

Aston following the trend for massive big grilles then.

Not that it matters as I'll never be able to afford one!

Don't be so mean, someone went to university to get a marketing degree to write that haha!

Article says sold out but suspect if you asked a dealer for one, they would find you one. The DBS was never a huge success and this isn't a massive upgrade over the old model.

You don't often see red cars spec'd with a tan/brown interior but it sort of works on this.

I can't understand the negativity about the interior of these. Its a lovely handcrafted place to be, with everything you need. Its a lot less fussy that the wannabe F1 driver Ferrari interiors which are garish, or Mercedes which look like Emirates business class.

The steering wheel is a funny shape, but I'm sure they'd sell you a round one.

Very nice but for me the front grill is too big. Nice but not wetting myself over it tbh.
