There's a USAF Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joint (airliner size, four engines) up at the moment that passed over north Essex earlier.

Maybe a little larger than what you saw/heard though.

There's been a large white airline sized plane circling overhead this afternoon near our village.

We're NE Cumbria, not far from Spadeadam - is this the same thing?

It's low enough to be on the descent to Newcastle but it's odd around here to see a commercial plane just doing big circular loops - seems to be on a descent and then climb trajectory.

That’s an RAF Boeing Poseidon, showing on FR24

...it's just come back right over our house, lower this time and heading south.

Twin engine and pointed swept back wings - definately looks like that Poseidon (which I've just Googled)

If it's a Poseidon, it'll be down from Lossiemouth; but, didn't know there were any submarines lurking under Spadeadam !

It's back today, buzzing around again.

definately that, twin engines and quite distinctive wings - notably swept back with that 'cut' at the end.

Been buzzing overhead for 2 days now - we get a fair bit of military stuff around here as they often use Carlisle airport for exercises which is only 3 miles away for Chinooks and other rotary types but not usually big stuff like this. Spadeadam is only 9 miles away so probably some sort of exercise going on.

Fascinating, I've never look at that - just watched it approach my house on that site and then simultaneously heard it overhead as came over.

As anticipated it went up the Irthing valley, turned north and flew directly over Spadeadam

That's exactly what they want you to think. Sneaky buggers those SSBNs.

Unless there's a top top top secret project afoot to merge a submarine with a tunnel boring machine !

Maybe they added a sub pen to Colinski AB.
