3yr old BMW 520 touring prices
Discussion
I typically buy 3yr old cars as it used to be the case the biggest bite of depreciation would've taken its toll.
I was looking at whether to buy a 3yr old BMW 520d touring (for family duties), but the prices seem to be around £26k-£29k with sub 60k mileage which just seems eye-wateringly painful.
I can't recall the exact pre-pandemic values, but think they would've been around £16k-£19k - so looks like paying a £10k premium - does this sound about right?
Are these prices people are actually paying or are dealers just trying it on and see what fools part with their money?
I'd rather not be that fool if it can be helped.
Ideally, was looking at 7 seaters - Q7, X5, GLE, Discovery - but have recently started a new job requires a commute of 100mile round trip 3 days a week - so now thinking a big estate maybe more suitable.
My current car is an Audi A6 2009 bought in 2012 for £14k with 70k miles on the clock, still going strong though suspension appears to be creaking, currently thinking of just keep driving it but have had it a long time and fancy a change.

Thought it was the chip shortage - strange, the chip shortage is not affecting other electronic goods - can buy TV's, laptops etc at same pre-pandemic levels
"£50 being the new £30k" - it does seem like 3yr old car is now priced like a 1yr old and 5yr old as a 3yr old
The mileage concerns me as never know if they are accurate or have been put back, I've recently read there are now mileage blockers!

My company car is a 2018 530d m sport touring which is shortly coming to the end of the 5 year lease. Out of interest I enquired about purchasing it. They are quoting £19k. It has 96k on the clock. Tempting but I will probably just get a new company car. Don’t worry about miles on these cars - mine drives like the day it was new and has only needed tires and brakes since new. Feels like it could easily double those miles with minor maintenance.
You’re not alone, I’m keeping an eye on Golf R estates. I nearly bought one in 2020 a few months into the pandemic.
It was 3 years old, 18k on the clock and £21k.
The same car is up for sale again, now it’s 6 years old, 47k and the same price £21k.
Just can’t do it, will stick with my current car.

I love a 5 series but that is a bonkers price!
I don’t get how anyone can defend what is just pure greed by dealers from COVID.
I don’t know when it will happen but unless wages jump massively cars are in for a massive price correction!
Its not really the dealers fault, they are having to pay more for them, so if your happy to take 5k less for your px then maybe prices will drop I don’t get how anyone can defend what is just pure greed by dealers from COVID.

List is huge on this stuff now, especially if you add extras (Msport, advance suspension etc)
I bought a November 2021 plate 530e touring (for £40K) when it was 12 months old. List new was £63k
, this was mid Covid so I assume there were not big discounts at the time.
Probably end up around £30k in another 18 months (3 years old with sub 40k miles) so around 50% of the new price.
Also since I sold the Taycan its lost £20k in value and the BMW has pretty much stood still.
A decent spec hot hatch (Golf GTI) can be over £40k today.

I had the same thoughts before I bought mine but what is the alternative, I had a Taycan 6 month earlier and have to admit in almost every way possible the BMW is a match to it If not better) same age but less than 50% of the price.I don’t get how anyone can defend what is just pure greed by dealers from COVID.

In early 2020 I bought an 2017 G31 520d Touring, non sport, but with 79k miles on it, for £14.5k from V12 Sports and Classics near Leicester, so not a desperate private seller, a dealer, but it was just a good price, not amazing at the time.
I sold it January last year for £22k with 97k on it.
A mate who had enough of the UK buggered off to live abroad, he asked me to sell his 65 plate F11 Luxury for £9k and clear the finance, and after driving it around for a few days I decided to keep that and sell the G31.
That G31 I was never a massive fan of, I loved the car, but it had a black interior which I never got on with. I bought it because it was the right price and thought I could grow to love the black interior. Which I sort of did, but after getting back in a car with a light interior and seeing that I could move the G31 on, and almost pay for the F11 with the profit it was a no brainer. OK it was 2 years older, but the F11 was better specced.
But it now makes everything else look so expensive.
I think they have come down a bit in the last few weeks, I keep thinking about another pre facelift G31, and even some nice 530d tourings with 65k turning up for £22k or so again. But they are 18 plates, which I forget is now 5 years old.
Things have certainly changed. Are we not just getting more in line with many European countries? Didn't the super low finance rates on cars in the UK skew ownership costs for years and now we are just getting back to what they cost?
When I now see BMW finance examples BMW's site for on nearly new cars you can see why used prices are so high.
A 2022 520d touring with 12k miles and £3500 down is £798 a month!
A 4 year old 520d touring with 55k miles, £1500 down and £588 month.
Both seem nuts to me.
I think many are now buying what they can afford with cash, no way I would pay 13% apr, so that is what I have done and sure many are doing the same or just keeping their car longer?
Or maybe taking a 5% bank loan out for £25k instead and setting themselves a stricter budget limit?
But interesting topic.

I sold my 2017 520d M-Sport Touring with 75k miles on it for £17k a few weeks ago to my Dad.
I did him a deal that was the same as what I was quoted from WBAC.
A colleague has a similar car, but 2018 and not as good spec but 30k miles. He’s looking at £23k.
Good cars, comfortable, but it never felt very reliable.
I paid just over £30k for mine when it was 1 year old with 10k miles. Same purchase of a 1 year old car now would be north of £40k I’d expect.

Thanks for all the replies - keep them coming - these real world experiences in these abnormal times provide a good sounding board for myself and others to try and gauge how best to move forward.
Would it be fair to say, though the prices are much higher, the depreciation if keeping a car for say 2-3yrs would be the same if not lower, therefore you wouldn't be taking a big financial hit. Appreciate this depends on the rear end not falling out of the used car market. This mythical chip shortage seems to be going on forever, or as I read elsewhere, car manufacturers are deliberately keep new car supply low to keep margins high.
This is exactly the kind of deal that I always try and go for - now everything is just so upside down, I don't know what the heck to do.

530e touring sounds sublime - though you've shelled out £40k, after 2yrs ownership if you sell for £30k, a loss of £10k - £5k a year depreciation - that's not bad going - and would be similar pre-covid times?

I bought an 8 month old, less than 2k miles, 520i petrol M sport from a main dealer in Jan 2020 for £23k. List was just over £40k from memory.
The prices now are simply crazy!
A quick scan of Autotrader suggests you’d need to pay 70% more for the same newly new low mile 520i today. The prices now are simply crazy!

I have a 2018 G31 done 58k that’s available if you want. It’s well specced and 22k.
Thanks for the offer, but I don't think I'm willing to commit to these high prices at the moment. Going to see how prices fare over the next few months as interest rates bite - as the whole point of interest rises to slow the economy down and reduce inflation and prices.Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
