My Auntie has a 1999 (I think, it's a V reg) Micra K11 that she has owned for over 20 years and it has done her brilliantly! Still drives well and completely fulfils her needs as a local run-around.

It broke down recently and her mechanic diagnosed a faulty ECU, said he couldn't get another one as they're no longer made and that she should scrap the car. The thing is, she can't afford another car and there is, apart from this issue, nothing wrong with this car.

Any suggestions as to where I might get one? Are there any companies, or car breakers, who specialise in this kind of thing? She doesn't have much money so we want to avoid buying a duff part, paying to get it fitted and finding that it doesn't work if at all possible.

The car's probably not worth more than £500 once fixed anyway, but it's a decent car if we can get it running again.

Had to fix similar recently on a 2000 Micra 1.4 depends what the problem is what is it doing ?

Both Ecu testing and BBA reman can help diagnose fix or replace these ecu subject to what’s up with the car.

Our one had a strange misfire / stutter tried all the obvious stuff plugs leads coil pack then throttle body .

None of this cured it so it Was then going to be a distributor or ecu these obviously no longer available from Nissan and would have been too expensive .

Found a new distributor off Amazon U.K. for £180 that cured it.

Hopefully this helps you save some money and keep it going if they don’t rust too much they last for years!

Awesome, thank you! Will give that a go.

The car in question has spent 95% of its life tucked up in a garage (auntie is retired, it's a genuine 'little old lady owned it, just drove it to church on a Sunday and to the shops') so it's remarkably rust free and in fine fettle! I drove it last year for some reason and it drives (drove, I guess) perfectly.

Several years ago I used a company called Cartech Electronics to provide a replacement (secondhand) ECU for our Punto Sporting. They 'virginise' the second hand ECU and gave instructions on how to code the ECU to the car. As far as I recall if we had just bought a second hand ECU it wouldnt have worked because of the coding on the key/ignition switch. The other thing to bear in mind is that (at least for my Punto) the cause of the failure of the ECU was a breakdown of the coilpack, which pulsed an electrical spike into the ECU. Cartech still appear to be in business and list ECUs for Nissans on their website.

Wow, that's a major thing to go wrong on a K11 that's only 24 years old. There are 1993 K11s out their that have never blown a light bulb. She seems to have an unreliable one.

Indeed, in all the 25 years I worked in Nissan parts I can`t recall ever being asked for a K11 ECU.

I would very much doubt it needs one.

If it does you need to get one with an identical 10 digit part number.
It would then require coding using Nissan Consult or similar.

You may be able to avoid this if you get the whole set of components from the donor, ECU, keys, etc.

Funnily enough I've had a K11 1.0 S need an ECU about 20 years ago. Was put down to water ingress and fortunately insurance covered it. It was the only thing to ever go wrong with that car.

Yep agree with this I’d be questioning the original diagnosis very very unlikely to be the ecu most likely it would not start at all.

Swapping ecu means needs to be cloned and then needs a new security NATS code better off fixing original ecu - but as above most likely not the ecu on one of these.

See my post above, Cartech Electronics can 'virginise' a second hand ECU (must be the same model of ECU obviously) to avoid any issues. The 'virginised' ECU will then code to the car without any problems. When my ECU went I sent it off to ECU Testing but they couldn't identify a fault. When I replaced it with the second hand one supplied by Cartech and also replaced the coil pack, the car ran fine.

Really appreciate all of the advice so far. beer

This is starting to sound complicated. What I really don't want to do is spend auntie's money chasing a problem that ends up costing more than the car is worth...

We use ECU testing, its a much simpler process than BBA reman, however we have also used

https://www.jccars.co.uk/ecu_programming.htm

When we wanted a cheap blank ECU for a Skoda.
