So, my 2014 VW Touareg 3.0 TDI is dead, having been rear-ended by a hooligan on a country road (stop sniggering at the back). Had it since new, and before that had the previous gen Touareg for 7 years.

I had planned to keep the old bus (was on 99k miles) for a few years and then see what the market was like in 2029 before the dreaded ICE ban.

But, I'm forced to buy something else now.

I have two dogs, and genuinely go off road often, and 4x4 has saved me many times. Wife wants an SUV, because it makes her feel safe, and to be fair, it stood up well in the crash.

I can't decide what to get. Thinking of maybe a diesel Cayenne, or XC90, but am I simply buying something that will be taxed/fuel dutied to death well before the ICE ban? Should I get a hybrid petrol, say, a Lexus RX450, given the petrol/diesel price disparity, potential future value, etc.

Budget around £30k. Suggestions, or ownership experiences for the Lexus? I have a 20 year old LS430 as my pootling machine and I'm super impressed with it.

I don't think the Lexus RX is 4wd in any meaningful way - the engine powers the front and the electric powers the rear.

You'd definitely have to put decent tyres on it to do anything more than a gravel track, which would probably ruin the refinement and economy.

I have a Lexus RX 450h and, whilst all season tyres and the all wheel drive (snow mode) performed flawlessly in the snowy mountains of Europe, it's not what you'd call a 4x4.

It's a very comfortable car, and I'm pleased with it, but it's a road vehicle and so, if you off road a lot, it probably won't meet your needs.

Mild muddy inclines. mostly. would the 4x4 mode cope with that? I'm not going green laning or anything....

Took my older RX450h off-roading the other week…just to see what it could do, it was a rocky/muddy mountain track with some fairly steep bits.

On fairly worn tyres with the suspension fully up it was pretty good, no Land Rover but fine. So I’d say a newer model on Pirelli Scorpion tyres, should not have an issue.

I left it caked in mud for a week and it looked great
