So, Aer Lingus cancelled our flight about 90mins before departure, didn't bother to notify anyone formally and basically left passengers to figure it all out themselves.

We're being put up in the TWA Hotel (a steal at circa £550+ per night) and the next available flight is 7pm (US) on the 19th Apr. Oh, and tomorrow night we have to pay for the room and claim it back.

There are zero available flights direct from JFK to MAN with any other airlines unless we a) pay £000's and b) want a flight that goes to MAN via 2-3 other stops and takes anywhere up to 14 hours. Can't even find a flight to another airport before the 19th!

They should offer you their next available flight, you can turn that down and take somebody elses next available flight.

You need to keep all receipts and make sure they are itemised. Once you are back you need to lodge a complaint with the airline and I would suggest lodging one with these guys as well.

Out of curiosity, what would happen if you were unable to pay the costs?

If you didn't have a credit card and you're current account had £250 in it.

What then, sit in the airport?

On the plus side, it's hardly the worst hotel in the world! Head upstairs, grab a cocktail, then jump in the pool and watch the planes smile

Aren't you supposed to prove on entry to the US you have sufficient funds?

Yes but its the OP's flight home???

Is pretty disgusting they expect people to be a credit facility but this is airlines and very thin margins.

What about lost days at work here?

I asked about that, they've told me it's full. There are seats available in Business Class but they won't give us those unless we pay, god forbid they put someone in an empty seat for free!

They've been a bit secretive about it all, none of us found out until 90mins before departure. Apparently the MAN to JFK flight was sat around for 7 hours yesterday before they cancelled it blaming it on the food having been on the plane too long.

This may be a theory but in over 100 trips I have never been asked.

I’ve been asked how in funding my trip and asked about what I do for a living which I assume they infer affordability from. I did once get asked quite specific questions about how much money I had available on credit cards etc so must have been looking particularly scruffy that day.

My wife was in a similar situation - KLM flight with two hour stopover in Amsterdam for connecting KLM flight to London. London flight cancelled. Next available flight 35 hours later. She didn't have an EU visa (Russian passport), so KLM left her in Schipol for 35 hours with no assistance, no where to sleep and no provision for food or drink. She spent the night hiding from various dodgy youths/men prowling the airport. Horrible experience.

They're adamant that is fully booked, same with JFK to GLA.

They are lying

Also, enjoy your EC261 compensation, on top of the reimbursment for the hotel, meals, and incidentals they are obligated to provide.

We'll, they put us on a standby flight and we've managed to get seated together on the plane. Just finished boarding.

Home soon, hopefully.
