996tt stereo mess - finally sorting, but need advice
Discussion
My stereo, which replaced my old PCM in my 2001 996tt about ten years ago, has never worked properly and I am finally getting around to doing something about it. It works intermittently - sometimes sound, sometime not - very hit and miss whether it works or not.
I am not an audiophile, so the solution will be simple and practical - single din head unit that looks Oem with Bluetooth to mainly act as a receiver for using my iphone for tunes and calls, using the existing 6x speakers.
The bad news is I have no idea what was done to replace the PCM by a certain, now closed, garage in Malton - as far as I can see, the amp is disconnected but still there, cd changer is gone and there is a lot of blue insulating tape around the radio wiring. It looks like it would be difficult to troubleshoot, and from what I have read on forums (loads of info on this topic) about replacing the PCM, the original setup is problematic for plugging in aftermarket systems. This maybe why the current head unit doesn’t work well. I don’t know if my car is MOST or not. Also, head units on the market only seem to handle four speakers not six so I doubt I could plug and play with whatever is there.
For those of you who have tackled PCM replacement, would you advise I need to add a new amp as well as a head unit, and if so, is the simplest solution to simply bypass the existing wiring with a new wiring loom?
Anyone know if MY2001 was MOST or not?
I will probably get a specialist to do the work, but I would rather give them a steer on what’s needed as I doubt they would know the car like some of you do.
