No more forced pre pay meters.
Discussion
If your over 85, but really why over 85, number picked at random?
I wonder how the companies got away with the forced fitting of these meters anyway. As I understand it they lied to the cvourts to get warrants.
Isn't telling lies to courts a serious offence any more, or is it just large companies that can get away with it? I can't believe the top managers are still in their jobs, the companies haven't been fined several times its profit, these that lied to the courts jailed and the magistrates who issued these warrants also sanctioned for being so easily conned by these companies.
Compensation to the people effected should be very large
OK there is probably a thread on this somewhere, please don't shout at me as I can't find it.
Wasn't sure whether to put this in politics or law?

The cases I have seen the police are only to happy to send several officers to aid the energy provider, will there be any action taken against them?
Bit like some forces aid TV Licencing, rather than just preventing the breach of the peace they knock and demand entry in some cases and there is no warrant in most cases.
Police are not there to further the interest of private companies, they are supposed to be impartial and not involve themselves in civil matters unless a breach of the peace is likely to occur.

This is the strange thing about our police.
So short staffed they cannot attend when you or I are in need of them.
But if a call goes out that a person of interest is at the local Asda petrol station, no fewer than 5 police cars turn up at silly speeds on blues and twos.
I honestly didn't believe we had that many police cars in our town.

My take is policing has changed so much and I have come across people bit like that PSNI drama on BBC (Lady WPC who tried to stay in the station and when she pulled over a vehicle with a marker she bottled searching it and threaten the other officer if she told. She also didn't attend a call for back up choosing to write a report), some people aren't cut out for frontline policing. Its been a growing issue,. I think most are fine but you get a percentage of people who don't want to be in dangerous situations so going to soft calls makes sense to them, also with graduate and fast track management roles more and more senior officers have less and less frontline experience, hence why community is dying, policing is more about politics than crime fighting now!So short staffed they cannot attend when you or I are in need of them.

Met got caught a few years back by being in a documentary stopping cars for bailiffs to cease cars for people with outstanding debts, it was the private ANPR system and pings but the police would stop them and then hand them over to this bailiffs!!
I believe someone senior got their knuckles rapped for that! Again the met has been a laughing stock for years.
They shut my local police station and any in local towns, just the odd outstation now which has no front desk. I have heard officers who have an hour drive avoid arresting people in latter parts of their shifts as the cells are 45 miles away for some.
My local outstation is part of the council office now but recently when you call they have know one available (friend had a masked men at his front door), funny thing you go round the back of the this office where they keep personal and police cars and nose about 6-7 officers pile out to see what's occurring.

Why is the motorway speed limit 70? It could so easily be 69 or 71 or any other number.Oliver Hardy said:

You want hefty compensation paid to people who weren't paying their electricity bills. How do you plan to calculate that compo and who do you think should pay it? You? Me? The magic money tree?Seems to me that if people know they don't need to pay their bills they probably won't pay their bills.

Exactly this! a certain demographic who sit on their backsides all day with a few offspring know full well their gas/electric can't be cut off due to them having children have heating on all day with nbo care about the bill as worse case scenario it gets deducted from their bebefits at 50p a week
I was involved in fitting PPM's to homes with and without warrants many years ago, outside meter box just required 3 visits and 3 letters through door, no call from occupants and meter went in. Warrants were the same, 3 visits, 3 letters, court for warrant then locksmith to gain entry, in both cases it takes 90 days of non payment and no contact before we got sent out, so it could actually take 120 days before it was warrant. one meter was fitted all the debt was added to it, it then got set to collect at £5 per week, so if they put £10 in £5 gets taken and they have £5 energy credit, that's only once a week, the rates were exactly the same as monthly billing. For the majority of cases this works better than trying to pay a quarterly bill, some do decide to not put credit on and self disconnect, this triggers more visits, the PPM taken out and a normal meter fitted, then the cycle begins again, so easy if you don't mind a few weeks with no energy, even better if family let you stay to get the meter reversed. All these costs for doing it get passed onto the rest of us, the energy companies get their money back somehow, so if anyone is thinking its unfair or immoral to fit PPM's, think twice when you look at your next bill, but I will say a PPM for anyone over 70 is wrong, and I never knowingly fitted one, considering the company I worked for had a team to look after anyone over 65 or vulnerable.Saleen836 said:

I posted previously on PH where years ago my energy supplier was taken over by Eon. I paid them by monthly DD, building up a credit in the summer and using this up in the winter. Unbeknown to me, Eon would manually reconcile the payments each month because of software/accounting issues between the two systems. Then for some reason that stopped.I wonder how the companies got away with the forced fitting of these meters anyway. As I understand it they lied to the cvourts to get warrants.

We had no letters saying we were in "debt", no red bills, no notice of warrant etc. What happened was that the prepayment company acting for Eon (begins with A, but I've forgotten the name), broke into our house to change the meters scaring the crap out of the Mrs V. and the Vikingettes who were 5 & 7. There was no knocking at the door or ringing the doorbell. Lock forced, UPVC door damaged, and 3 burly men bursting in.
At every stage Eon lied. I asked them to deal with my complaint by email only - they ignored that and their Resolution Managers called incessantly to "resolve the matter." I wanted the names of the person who appeared before the Magistrates Court, their representatives who forced their way into our house and the locksmith. I told them explicitly that I just wanted their names and office addresses so the Police could contact them, and not their personal addresses. Eon asked why, and I told them I wanted them charged. They stonewalled me, even when I made a SAR. For some reason, maybe a commercial agreement, they did everything to delay, bluff, lie, and refused to give me that information.
For this reason, I couldn't give 2 hoots about any energy company. Their practices are and still will be low - they are a commercial business and they will do everything to work within and bend any laws and scrutiny for profit.

There were examples of people who had their meters changed because the previous occupier didn't pay a bill two years previously.
I have no idea why the motorway speed limit is 70.
Who should pay, the private companies who float procedures and break the law
Because in 1967 the Minister of Transport accepted that a limit of 70 mph would reduce accidents and the severity of accidents.
Since 1967 the construction and safety of motor cars has increased out of all proportion, but.......
The number cars on the roads of the UK has increased from 8 million to 33 million, a 4 fold rise.
And the standard of driving has fallen by about a factor of 4 too.

Be interesting to know why 70 though?Since 1967 the construction and safety of motor cars has increased out of all proportion, but.......

We're drifting well OT bit that's a fair point. I guess few cars could achieve higher speeds back in the day.I visit the US and remember when the national speed limit was a universal 55 mph. Talk about watching paint dry! Now they've relaxed that enormously, several states having increased their Interstate limits and Texas having gone all the way to 85 mph.
Meanwhile the south of England moves inexorably towards 20 mph in urban areas and 40 mph everywhere else, unless you're on a motorway. Good luck finding one of those - and if you do it'll probably be a "smart" motorway with 50 mph illuminated signs.
