Evening all.
Straight to the point. I've got an absolute max budget of 8k.
Requirements-
Diesel exec saloon or coupe, 2 - 3 Litre, minimum 200bhp, preferably 40+mpg, auto, max £300 ved,
Current line up is A5/6, C or E250 Cdi AMG, XF or XF/S,
BMW 330/530
Open to alternatives
Your collective knowledge would be most appreciated.

A8 4.2 TDI SE

Only joking but a lot of car. Likewise the Phaeton.

At this price point I would not care about Jag v Audi v Mer v BMW. Buy on condition, history and the cut of the seller's jib.

Most of those probably won't give you 40mpg in real life

I do like the Phaeton but I've heard that parts are horrendously expensive ?

Merc R 320 CDi. I got 50mpg from mine, super comfortable, fast and for that money you’d get a very nice one and have a bork fund for the two known issues (intake flaps and, depending on age, air suspension). Also lots of seats, quiet, amazing load area, great ventilation - one of the few “normal” cars I’d have again.

I'd go for the E350cdi coupe, they're pretty much bulletproof & are a nicer drive than the E250, yes they're £20 over your tax budget but it's worth paying the extra::
