So the 2 boys have grown a bit, the camper van is now too small to camp in and too big for anything else. Dad also wants to have a bit of driving pleasure and may want to treat himself and his family to a memorable carriage. Here are some issues to consider:

1. Usage: very little, about 10- 15 tsd km / year, mostly highway but also some alpine passes for the few family vacations.

2. Size: we got spoiled with the Viano, the ability to chuck anything in it and also enjoy the feeling of spaciousness is almost luxurious. I got used to its 5 m length and am comfortble driving large cars. It needs to comfortably fit a family of 4 with holiday stuff.

3. Comfort: I love a refined wafty ride, but the chassis needs to also show that it was well engineered and can tackle some alpine roads. Obviously it will not be trashed around the twisties with the family in it, but a Jackyl & Hyde type of personality would be great.

4. Luxury: I hate all the screen interiours, would like something that does not feel like a cheap electronics shop.

Reliability, large fuel range are also considerations. Image wise it should not be too shouty but this is secondary. Budget is open!

Large estate or SUV?
E53 or 63 estate, RS6, B5, Panamera, SQ7, Cayenne, X5, FFRR, Stelvio Quadrofoglio...what am I missing?

E53 Estate is the pick or if a saloon can work then the XJ is a very good drivers car.

Since you've not mentioned a price, the recent M5 CS has been praised to the heavens as a drivers' car, ECOTY etc, it's also meant to ride decently, to do the Jekyll & Hyde thing (better than the base or Competition variants). It's really rare for a 4.9m long 2 tonne big saloon to be rated as a better drivers' car than the latest GT3 etc, so if budget stretches then I think you're in luck.
