Hi all,

I was in a foreign country recently and the hire car experienced a windscreen crack. I had not taken out the additional insurance with the hire car provider, as I have my own hire car excess insurance policy.

If I claim on the hire car excess policy, is this something I would need to declare as a claim in future for my personal motor insurance?

It’s a bit nuanced as it isn’t a motor vehicle insurance policy, but rather insurance against the rental car company’s excess (£1400), and it wasn’t an accident but rather windscreen damage.

Or is it reportable because the hire car company y would claim against their insurance and my name associated with the claim? (Note (1) it was in a foreign country and (2) I can’t imagine they would actually claim on their insurance for the windscreen and instead are just making a big profit here as the windscreen won’t cost £1400 to replace?)

Thanks!

I wouldn't, and haven't in the past.

ETA: just checked and mine is with Questor too - about £40 for the year when I renewed

I would work on the basis that when making a windscreen claim in this country U.K insurers aren't interested when it comes to renewal time so the same would apply in your case here.

I certainly wouldn’t - your hire car insurance is insuring the excess. It’s not a motor policy.

Ask insurer if they need to hear about a windscreen repair, and take that answer as your notification? IANAL

1 Day and you didn't like the responses? - or not enough arguing? :-) - as above - its not the same thing. Stay schtum unless you like paying more for things. Car hire excess insurance is not the same as car hire insurance.
