Jag XF - how bad could it be?
Discussion
Hi,
I'm tempted by an XF, probably somewhere about 2016-2018. Obviously the reputation of some of the JLR stuff is patchy at best, although I'm not sure how much of that is from specific issues rather than the whole range.
I've heard enough tales of woe regarding the diesel Ingeniums to want to stay well clear, which means I'm considering the AJ V6 3.0d v6, or the petrol 25t (which I think is an Ingenium too).
Does anyone have an idea of:
- Are there issues with the 3.0d as well, or are those generally a bit more robust?
- Are the petrol ingeniums as bad as the diesels?
- Should I run away completely?
Thanks!

I heard rumours the 3.0 diesels suffered from snapping crankshafts.
That might be caused by the oil dilution issues.
If that is the same V6 as fitted to the disco 4 then it is caused by undersized bearings and poor manufacturing/QC of the cranks. That might be caused by the oil dilution issues.
There is a graveyard of 3 litre engines with snapped cranks up in Scotland according to a previous thread on here.

My son has the 3.0l diesel and that also had an issue with water ingress damaging the ECU, which he was told was a common problem. I think he said it was a plastic cooling pipe that perished and water leaked onto it.
That cost him about £1200 to replace.
That would be the earlier X250 model. That cost him about £1200 to replace.

They're pretty lovely places to be; certainly the 3.0d has a couple of known faults - the crankshaft bearings being one; but it seems in the Jaguar application it's far less likely to happen than in the Discovery. Much debate seems to exist on 'why', but either way, it's a win for you!
Otherwise, very comfortable place to spend a lot of time. Definitely get the uprated Meridian sound - as with most premium saloons, the base stereo is a bit clock radio, but the branded one has some heft to it.

I think the main problems with these engines are short journeys, stop/start and services intervals.
I do long journeys, turn off stop/start and service every 12/13000 miles.
Had the car just over year and 29000 miles and no problem, now on nearly 80000 miles.
Although before I had it service was long intervals and I think possible a large problem occurred , don't know what though!
