gear problems

I have just had my gearbox re conditioned, and am now finding the gears really stiff and notchy with frequent difficulty getting the gears to go in. This is really frustrating as this was the reason I had the gearbox re conditioned...on the advice of the garage after they found no obvious problems. They have told me it may take some time to bed in but I really can't detect any improvement from when I brought the car in! Just wondered if anyone had any ideas for when I undoubtedly go back yet again to get them to look at it...

All gears or just first?

Well 1st is the worst....but it does it in 2nd and 3rd too??!!

Are you sure its the gearbox? Is the clutch releasing properly? e.g air in hydraulics, faulty cylinder?

Mmm Maybe? I will mention it to the garage as I have to rely on them... not very technically minded myself!

Is it filled with the correct fluid (which depends on the type of box)?

I’ve just put a reconditioned LT77 gearbox in mine and I have no problems with gear selection now. It shouldn’t need bedding in, I would get the oil level checked again after a few miles because it will drop slightly after running it.

Previously I had problems selecting 1st & 2nd on mine which was down to adjustment of the plate that forms the reverse gate. It was too far over and the stick would hit it before aligning with the selector for 1st/2nd.
As you’re getting problems with 3rd too then this sounds less likely however it may still be alignment of the gearstick/remote etc.

Personally I’d suspect the clutch. One thing to try is selecting gears when the engine is off. If gear selection is easier when the engine is not running then this points to the clutch not disengaging properly. Also with the engine running it may roll forward slightly on the flat with the brakes off when selecting 1st if the clutch is not completely disengaged.

Thanks for the comments...the gears move fine when the engine is off so it's probably the clutch. Just strange as it had a new clutch about 20,000 miles ago?!!

May just need to blead the slave cylinder.
