space for wasted spark!
Discussion
Hi,
if space is limited then go for an MSD6A amp and keep the distributor. Go for a Megasquirt ECU, trigger of the crank and youll have a fully mappable setup for under £300. Then when your feeling more confident, throw the Lucas ECU and MAF away and let the Megasquirt control the fuel too. Ive got mine running fuel and spark on my Megasquirt, no idea of power as yet but I will be getting it on a Rollin Road soon. I have maps that would help you get it running. Megasquirt can also control wasted spark, your best bet is Edis 8, ford stuff,

More involved than that dax .. all will be revealed.
Sounds exciting. Must confess the spark side of these things is crying out for some attention, very tempted to sell some MS's setup for spark control either for MSD or the standard coil, just to prove the power gains. Would be interesting just to do a few TVR's and find out exactly what they gained. Hmmm, theres a thought,

On mine I have had the coil packs at the pack of the engine on a vertical plate but that wouldn't work on a Griff as the bulkhead is in the way. On a horizonatl plate at the back with the triple throttle body plenum and now I have them Cerbera style in the V between the two banks of TBs.
Dax - I'm working (very slowly in between "real work" and fixing the house
) on a VEMS ECU - it should be very similar to the MS.
It would be interesting to compare notes when they're done.
I'm planning to use 8 bosch MEC723 coils (or something smaller if you can suggest something) as a fully sequential spark setup. Maybe the Peugoet coils would work for me?

I've managed to get myself a 4.6 Thor engine with the coil packs. It's rather neatly bracketed vertically at the back of the manifold. As Steve said unfortunately it is (only just) too close to the bulkhead. Wonder if you could do a weird double deck bracket where the dizzy goes?
As an aside, has anyone (or do you know anyone) who has used a fluid viscous crank damper on the RV8. According to the Real Steel catalogue a Small Block Ford competition damper fits on (asked Real Steel but they won't use fluid dampers).

Hi all,
I just got back from a scrap yard, need some ignition modules to play with for the MS stuff. Anyhow, the BMW 4 cylinder has a loverly black module to the right of the engine bay with 4 coils in it. 2 of these, 1 either side, would look good, didnt appear to be that big either, no idea how much spare space you lot have though. They just looked nice and not too big.
VEM's!! Tut tut tut

Thanks for the input guys.Firstly,i dont want to remove the dizy just yet,so the only space i seem to have is where the existing coil is.As others have said, theres no room behind the engine, and i didnt really want to have to move the pas resevoir, but realise i may have to.I cant mount the coil packs vertically either, due to bonnet clearance.
Dax-im running an omex 710,so already have fully mappable fuel and ignition, but want to try the coil packs as im having problems with the dizzy.
Julian-i hope your right about the puegeot units being compact! My other problem is getting some leads made up before i go back.Darren told me they dont make leads up,so im going to have to assume the coil packs will go where i want them to,so that i can order the correct lead lengths!

Mike - the Lucas GEMS coil pack from the P38A Range Rover fits in perfectly at the back of the engine. It doesn't look like it will, but it does. This has the added advantage that you can use a standard Range Rover lead set.
You want to get a second-hand one if you can, because they are over £240+VAT new. Try a good Land Rover breaker, or eBay. If you're not sure what they look like, then e-mail me for a picture.
This is what we used on the last one at Austec (with an Omex 710 on - and no you can't syphon the map). If you are around, that car will be at the Austec open day next month should you want to see it.
You've been so rude to me in the past, I don't know why I'm helping you. But I just can't stop myself
