Toyota Yaris GRMN | Spotted

The GR isn't the only hot Yaris to look like a rally car, y'know...

Just as it seemed like the hype had died down around the GR Yaris, so we lit a fire back under it with the PH25 vid. Sorry not sorry and all that - if ever a modern hot hatch warranted the excitement, that must be it. And now we’re onto track cars, those typically quite expensive, always very rare creations that are daubed in stickers to show how much like a racing car they really are. From STI to STO, stickers are almost mandatory. And wouldn’t you know, there’s actually a Toyota Yaris with GR in its name that also fits the track car bill. Sort of.

While the GRMN wasn’t a full-on circuit car - it being a creation not quite as extreme as the most hardcore hot hatches - it did undergo the kind of overhaul that marks out the very best road racers. It was developed by a small team of dedicated enthusiasts (which is always a good start) freed from the strictures of a large production run or endless management approvals. A host of expensive hardware was thrown at the unsuspecting Yaris, too, from Sachs dampers to a Torsen limited-slip diff, and BBS wheels to a Magnuson Eaton supercharger. All for 600 cars that had to roll down the regular Yaris production line, with just 100 allocated to Britain.

So like many track icons, the GRMN was rare. Expensive, too, which was to be expected with the kit list and the small production run: £26,295 was unheard of pre-GR, and made the Meister of the Nurburgring more expensive than even the priciest Fiesta ST. Which had some hot hatch heritage in the UK, whereas the Toyota Yaris really didn’t. It all looked quite a tough sell, but Toyota judged it just right, as every UK allocation found a buyer. There wasn’t quite the furore around secondhand ones as with the GR, but if memory serves correctly they weren’t hanging around for ages either. The car buying world, especially for limited edition stuff, feels extremely different to just five years ago.

Those that did get one must have been pleased. While a few quirks of the platform meant the GRMN wasn’t perfect, it absolutely did the business on track, seeming dogged and determined where many lesser cars would give in. It would lap hard for ages, the perfect front-wheel drive car to hone your craft in. The stickers were most certainly not just for show, however strange they looked on a lofty Yaris.

But here’s a GRMN without them, for the full ex-works rally car look. Though they were standard fit, the black and red slashes could be removed, and it’s a fascinating little car that results. To many it’ll just be another white Yaris, and it’s only when looking really closely - note the spoiler, exhaust and badges - that the keen will notice it’s something special. Which is cool. Like a GT3 RS without the contrast bits or a V12 Vantage without the wing, the slightly subtler look is nothing if not intriguing.

Plenty mocked the asking price back then, but this immaculate example - with just 14,000 miles - is still commanding £20k. Which, as half a decade ago, means plenty of alternatives are available. But surely none will be as rare, and few will likely be as sorted for circuit. It might look almost like any other Yaris, and the advert might be written like it’s any other Yaris, but this is far, far more interesting - especially without the graphics. Best get booking your first track day with it…

I always rather liked these. I thought they were quite an interesting thing. Given what else they were producing at the time, this was a real departure, and a sign of a things to come.

Looks a bit plain without the stickers, and not sure I could justify the asking price personally, but definitely an interesting car, and I'm glad it exists.

Love it, especially in plain white. Only a handful of passers-by on the street would know what it is.

Owned one for around 9 months I think it was. Only reason it went is because I got back what I paid for it when prices went mental.

No one knew what it was and I removed the stickers off it looked like a normal Yaris to untrained eyes.

Front brake replacement is absolutely criminal on them. Alloys are mega money and backbox replacement was £5.5k if memory serves me correctly.

Mine was on its 4th set of front pads and 2nd set of tyres at 18k miles when sold also managed to destroy a clutch at 13k miles.

Alot of them are now on hands of collectors and I do feel they'll be more of a collectors cars than the new gr due to limited production numbers.

I think 100 were allocated to UK I had number 371 I think it was

Those mpg figures are wildly optimistic aswell lucky to see 30mpg. The thing eats fuel like it's going out of fashion

I do like these, but this is what worried me, special parts costs after expensive purchase cost. I wonder if it'll effect the Yaris GR prices later as well, unless Indys can make/source cheaper replacements?

I believe tarox were making a set of identical front brake discs which will keep costs down. The OEM discs work really well but eventually will need replacing

Any forged wheel is going to be expensive so that's no different to any fancy wheels

The backbox is mega money and like everything eventually it'll want replacing however Toyota run the 10 year warranty and a few were looking into it when I had mine. Everything is covered including the supercharger which is £12k to replace as a warranty job apparently.

I think you'll start to see a lot of Yaris gr being traded in when they are due brake replacements usually around the 4th year major service as most things want a major service, tyres and brakes etc.... That'll be a big bill

Always interested me as I love a good ol' supercharger. Looks alright without the stickers to be honest, I'd probably go that way. Bills as mentioned above though, sound extremely painful.

This is at least the third GRMN Yaris spotted thread on PH. Not bad for a run of 100 UK cars.

As the saying goes. It was used as intended! It was a second car. Tbh I fitted the tyres and went through a set of front pads in my 9 months. It was a Toyota demo car that went to a few track days, a trend the 1st owner carried on and I just went b road bashing, road trips etc... Car took everything in its stride. It encourages you to drive it hard and once you get to grips with the lsd, the harder you press the accelerator pedal mid corner the harder it pulls the nose round. Absolute wizardry lsd in fwd cars.

The parts I mention at crazy money weren't for my car but figures that were mentioned for other owners etc...

Smallish fuel tank as well isn't it? I was sorely tempted by one last year but the fuel tank range and cabin interior size put me off.

40L rings a bell. I never had more than 250 from a tank full but I didn't buy it for economy

Given the price of some parts (as it seems at least) I would defo just spend a bit more over the 20k and get a GR. They are now creeping under 30k. Look much better, faster, and quicker A to B.

I do like these, but I don’t love them. Part of me thinks it’s great that only those in the know would ever have a clue how trick it is, and the other part of me thinks that it just looks like a white goods vehicle.

But won't it fall into the same camp, expensive consumables not covered by warranty (exhaust, brakes, wheels, suspension etc)? It's good that some of the prices of the GRMN parts are filtering through to give prospective owners more info.
