Approximately 300k about to arrive from an inheritance.

Planning to use it for a house build so fairly risk averse but wont be able to start the project for probably 2 years.

Where should I place it for the best return?

Of course build costs are escalating fast but cant start earlier.

Nice problem to have I guess.

Max your ISA first plus the other half if you have one. Same again for premium bonds. Then the rest into the best savings accounts you can find, max of £85,000 per account. Should get 3.5% minimum.

Personal opinion. In no way qualified

Short dates low yield gilts. The “ interest” is all capital gain and there is no cgt on gilts. 3.5% is equiv to some 5.8% gross depending on your tax rate.

Don’t do a self build. I am doing one now !

Cheers I'll look into the gilts.

A bit O/T I guess, but not sure what constitutes a self build. I doubt I'll be actually building anything myself, but we are driving the project. Currently 2 years into a world of pain with architects, planning consultants and other "experts" doing battle with the local planning dept! Still, only spent £50k so far and now about to restart with a revised plan!

Yup, never underestimate the civil services ability to make you spend your money on things that you would never waste it on yourself.

Happy not to -bought back unpleasant stressful times when we had to replace our 400 year old roof.

Okay, so I live under your bed, whilst guarding my 300 bags?,?

Sounds interesting. Do you have central heating?

Likewise I am not laying bricks but it takes over your life and the costs of materials and labour are daft
