I have to give a 4 year old lease car back to the lease company in July. I didn't take out a maintenance agreement. Services are annual and I had them done in 20, 21 and 22. Do I have to get the 2023 service and MOT done before I give it back? There will be about a month left on the MOT.

Without seeing your terms and conditions hard to say but it is usual for you to return a lease car with a service and an MOT.

Thanks. It's 4 years old so had its first MOT August last year. Lease just says car must be maintained in line with manufacturers specifications. If I give it back in July MOT will have about a month on it.

Service interval is 9k miles. It will be 4 years old with about 33k on it when I give it back meaning it's 3k short of the next service.

You should be fine. It would still have a valid MOT and the service isn't due yet.

You run into bother if it has no MOT or the service is overdue.

I’ve had two lease cars - both times I’ve had it serviced a couple of weeks early, meaning when it was time to go back the service wasn’t due for two weeks. Worked both times. biggrin

Yes but haven't you then paid for an extra service which is what I'm trying to avoid?

If the service is not due, why would you do it?!

I've just returned a Mazda to Santander after a three year lease.

I had to have the third service and the MOT done before it was handed back.

Check the terms on your lease.

Personally I wouldn't but I don't want to give it back to the lease company then have them charge me for one at their prices.

It'll be in your T&Cs how they expect the car to be returned.

All my previous leases, as long as the MOT is valid on the date of collection that's fine. In terms of servicing, I've opted to hand cars back slightly early, as avoiding the service cost more than offset the early termination fee. (typically 50% of the outstanding payment due).

This is what the lease says:

"9 The Hirer's obligations when maintenance is not provided by the Lessor
9.1 If the maintenance option has not been selected in the vehicle schedule the following provisions of this clause 9 will apply.
9.2 The Hirer will be responsible for and will pay the full cost of servicing and maintaining the Vehicle at all times in good condition.
9.3 Without prejudice to the generality of clause 9.2 the Hirer will ensure
(a) that the Vehicle is regularly serviced and maintained by an approved agent in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations;
(b) that the service book and records for the Vehicle as supplied by the manufacturer are promptly stamped by the approved agent as soon as all the necessary or appropriate works of service or maintenance have been carried out."

"20.2 The Hirer shall ensure that the Vehicle is in good order, repair and
condition (fair wear and tear only excepted) and that the registration book
for the Vehicle (if previously delivered to the Hirer) and all documents
relating to the manufacturer's warranty for and the maintenance and
service records of the Vehicle are with the Vehicle on its return.

Reads to me that you just need to have had it serviced to manufaacturers schedule. If it's 9k/12 months and not due until August with you returning it in July then you're fine.

As for MOT, my lease (VWFS) just required it to be current on the day of collection. Your return/hand back conditions will no doubt state the MOT requirement somewhere.

Sorry. Have had some wine. I meant a couple of weeks late, not early. hehe

I have never come across a personal or business contract hire lease from a mainstream funder that stipulates servicing before return unless it was due at point of collection so you should be fine.

For reference some funders just need an invoice from a VAT registered garage (I have seen £70k Range Rovers serviced at the local tyre centre), others allow you to hand back with the service overdue by up to 30 days / 1000 miles.

Check your contract or list who the funder is and I might be able to guide you.

Thanks. The funder is leasys. I think I'll be OK as I'll be returning it several weeks early and the mileage is well under the service limit.

I'm just paranoid about excess charges as I've had loads of issues with airport rentals in the past. I guess this is different but once bitten and all that...
