Jeans and a T shirt. Is this a good look? Is a polo shirt a better bet? Is there any alternative to looking like an investment banker trying too hard on a dress down Friday?

I was going to pose this question some time ago after watching Live 8 but forgot as it is what I usually wear when not going out to see clients. Moved to ask since seeing Ricky Gervais, who is somewhat rounder than I am, and Dave Gilmour, who is somewhat older than I am, going the T and jeans route, and frankly, not looking too good.

So, GQ readers and ph fashionista, discuss, as they say.

Dark jeans and a plain black T-shirt. Very understated, not trying too hard.

The footwear is important and often overlooked. The jeans must fit well too.

Overall tho, I love it!

My mate Rob swears by jeans and a checked shirt, I've never seen him wear anything different.

But he does drive a tractor for a living!

I think that alot of fashion is not so much what you wear, it's HOW you wear it.

And by that I mean that if I was wearing something in the height of fashion, but looked rubbish on me...be it because of my size (very thin), or colouring for example...then, regardless of whether it's fashionabl, it STILL LOOKS RUBBISH.

However, if you wear something that suits you, AND you carry it off well, and it makes you feel confident (and hence make you exert confidence), then bob's your uncle.

No arm belts, though

ooo, just to add, if we're getting specific, NEAT AND TIDY trainers (not scruffy ones. I know they're still 'trainers' but it just looks like you haven't tried) and make sure the jeans are at least a small boot cut to them (no 'drain pipes', as it spoils the relaxed look that jeans and trainers try to give).

and yes, I'm well aware of the irony of having said in my first post 'just make sure you wear it right' and then in my second saying 'make sure you wear XX'.

Doh!

Depends alot on what you're doing, where you're doing it, and what kind of people you're doing it with...

Also, not all t-shirts or polo shirts are born equal; the wrong polo shirt can make you look like a chav rather than a banker trying to dress down, and will also depend on whether its worn with jeans or some other kind of (smarter) trousers...

Jeans and a t-shirt? What's wrong with that??

I prefer more fitted t-shirts on men, though. It's neater and cooler.

I quite like those polo shirts at the moment that have more of an 'edge' too. Quite sexy.

But pink t-shirts and anything verging on pink is not allowed.

Speed matters – if you look good while blatting/hooning then so be it but it should be by accident, we all know the only men who know anything about fashion are gay.

Surely it also depends somewhat on what kind of body its fitted to? Or do you like seeing every ripple of that beer belly?

I wondered how long it would take for the word 'gay' to appear in this thread!

Now't wrong with considering your appearance from time to time, lads!

I'd agree with the comment about fitted t-shirts. And for goodness sake DO NOT TUCK YOUR T-SHIRT INTO YOUR JEANS!!! And still clear of tapered legs on your jeans. Straight or boot cut looks much better.

Can never get on with polo shirts myself. To me they scream "I'd rather be wearing my suit!" especially when worn tucked in

Polo shirts ! yes, they were cool - 15 years ago

Jeans and T shirt is a classic look, BUT, its hard to do well and very easy to do badly.

Both jeans and T shirts are pretty unforgiving, so unless you had a good body you stand a good chance of looking like an ageing fat bloke trying too hard.

All IMHO of course.

There still cool! You just wear them inside out nowadays! haha.

As for the beer-belly-in-a-tight-t-shirt thing - totally agree it should be avoided. But all the men I am around have nice bodies and nice bellies, and more importantly, no man boobs.

So that means it's ok.

titiany, what's wrong with pink? I have several pink shirts/t-shirts and have been told on mor than one occasion that they look good on me.

What I will say, is that if you want to look good but not to be seen trying too hard, try a long-sleeve plain white shirt, jeans and white trainers (preferably with a thin sole). Roll the sleeves up a bit and there you have it!

i kill every thread i go on so let's see about this one!

i think Polo shirts did die a bit of a death but there's a definite resurgence this year!

for me though make sure the collar is too open - it looks rubbish.
