I enjoy me cars/bikes. I go out and drive just for the enjoyment of doing so. I probably pay many £K /year in taxes, fuel, insurance etc so im going want quite a bit to not go and do something I enjoy.
PS id pay quite a lot not to have to drive to work, or have a self driving car to do it for me.

I was bored earlier so went out on my bike, left at midnight got back at 3:30. This isn’t unusual. Did circa 1200miles around Spain last month, maybe 10k around Europe for holidays in the last 12 months. I’m doing a trackday next Saturday, not a fan of taxis or being driven, public transport is crap here.
So it’s a no from me. It would have to be a medical issue that prevented me from driving or riding.

i had to stop driving due to health reasons, i did have to adjust my life, ie move closer to a town centre so i could walk for shopping, but other than that i dont miss driving at all, its not a pleasure anymore, potholed roads, bad drivers, etc, but the jist is, i feel more free not driving, plus i save a shed load of money, win win.
I did have to change my life tho, move from the stix to a city centre, so not for everyone, but lets face it driving these days is a chore not a pleasure on most of the uk roads.
I still have a race bike i use for track days sometimes, dont race anymore ad not quick enough these days, so get my fix there, and i run racing cars for a job, but i dont understand why people cling on to driving on the roads anymore tbh, roads=frustration. track=fun, other than that get the bus or train, obviously if you live in the stix a very different thing

So is the money in addition to alternative transport costs?
I live in a quite rural place and work about 15 miles away, taxi's are rather expensive so I would need about £40 each way (mostly 20/30mph roads), so I would need £240 a week minimum (still a few WFH days). Like most of the UK the bus service is a non starter if you work; designed around people who have a free/concession pass so kids, students and OAP, the local service starts at 08:30 and ends by 3:30, which is not long enough for people who actually work. it is also very expensive probably £30 a day due to the number of changes, and take around 2.5 hours to get near work, the nearest bus stop to work is about 2 miles from my office, so lets say 3 hours each way... this is not looking realistic, is it...?
Anyone think the UK is setup to fail on it's quest to dump cars due to it's expensive and woefully inadequate and expensive public transport system?
If I retire I will give up the car if I am still strong enough to walk to the nearest town and back in winter, although I am more likely to give up the UK before working.

I live in a rural village with no viable public transport (2 buses per day). This makes things challenging.
I live 4 miles from work, so can (and often do) walk. But I'd have to walk in the rain with no car.
I couldn't travel to other (rural) sites for work easily unless at significant cost and loss of convenience.
I couldn't go to see many friends or family that live in rural locations easily.
I'd miss driving.
So, a hard no from me unless the financial rewards were significant (above £1,000 a month on top of the savings I'd make not driving, for sure.)
I don't live in a rural village with a bus stop across the road. However getting anywhere is still expensive and time consuming, for example getting to my sister's takes 15 by car, over an hour by bus. Work, I do agency work, last place I worked across town on an old air field now an industrial estate no buses run to it. I finished work at 3 or 4 am.I live 4 miles from work, so can (and often do) walk. But I'd have to walk in the rain with no car.

I have two quite large shops within 5 minutes walking distance, Coop and McColl's, but they are expensive and range is poor.
I went with ‘over my dead body.’
I’m sure there’s a figure per month where I’d cash out, but have no idea how much higher than the maximum suggestion it’d be.
I currently do 2x 150 mile round trips for work, plus other ‘stuff’, plus driving for pleasure. The round trips would be a logistical nightmare involving a car+driver for the day which wouldn’t come cheap, plus taxi’s etc for other stuff as we don’t have public transport around here.
We then get to the dilemma of you offering me say 10k a month to hand over the car, and I’d then want to spend that on ridiculous cars…
I’d therefore do it for ‘enough to easily pay for a house with a helipad and helicopter’.

I voted £1000-1500.
But on reflection that’s not enough. I like just jumping into the car or onto my bike and I’d miss the spontaneity of the whole experience.
Planned local journeys would be fine and longer ones by train, yes the money would compensate but I’d hate to be tied to timetables.
