Perhaps mega expensive is the right price. If the only quotes you can get are mega expensive, then it would appear mega expensive is correct. £4000 is possibly ridiculously cheap for the details in question.

The Golf R is unfortunately among the highest-risk cars to insure, and being 19 you'll be seen statistically as high-risk by insurance companies. Parking on street isn't good either, the R is the top pick for criminals to take and use for other crimes, with its 4wd, lots of power, four doors and decent boot it's perfect for the odd robbery.

It's not just you, back in the 90s Jeremy Clarkson reported being quoted £25,000 a year to insure an Escort Cosworth - the Golf R is the modern equivalent.

Basically, your best bet is to buy something else. Even a 'sportier' car like a Cayman or something is probably cheaper to insure as they're less practical for robberies.

They are a target car unfortunately. High risk for insurance means high price for you.

I'm in about the same area too, and I'm surprised to read this. I never thought of the Golf R drivers around here as being the type who'd have insurance tongue out

But seriously, I just did a quick quote, and even at over twice your age, couple of decades of no claims, car not parked on the street etc, I'm still seeing quotes of about a grand, which is much higher than I see on pretty much anything else.

I'm afraid I think the other posters probably have the right of it, this combination of car, owner, and circumstances is borderline radioactive from an insurer's point of view.

Would a GTI be a cheaper option?

19 years old and Golf R.

Not surprising that insurance companies are running for the hills unfortunately.

You’ll either have to pay up or trundle around in something more sedate for a few more years I’m afraid.

Not surprising. A Golf R is reasonably quick, often driven by complete dheads and quite popular with thieves.

I have a Golf r as a runaround, costs peanuts to insure. However I'm nearly three times as old as you. I'd much rather be your age and drive a boggo Fiesta. hehe

My advice is to be 40, have 20 years no claims, live in rural Somerset, and keep your car garaged overnight. Should be cheaper then.

Yeah there's a bit of a join the dots here in that it's a really fast car often badly driven often by young drivers and often nicked and Leicester is arguably not a great area unless you live in one of the leafy bits.

TBH I find most Golfs pretty boring, even the quicker versions.

Look for something a little different to the norm.

Why spend all that cash just to be like every other c**t?

Is that really what you want?

If you’ve made your mind up then fair enough, my apologies…

Because every other that owns one isn't as young as him?

Wait a few years.. sorry your risk profile is unacceptable to the insurers not based on your driving, but based on the probability of theft and/or you crashing it.

Assuming you’re comfortable breaking the law the Golf R is surprisingly engaging to drive at the limit, especially the Mk 8.

They are as boring as anything when driven slowly.

This is literally the perfect storm in insurance.

Young, inexperienced driver
Fast car
Bad postcode
Very high theft risk.

You can't make yourself older. And its fairly hard to move to a better postcode. So that leaves changing the car. Either go for a slower golf, or conversely, ditch the golf and get a 997 911, which personally, i reckon will be easier to insure in your circumstances.

The slower golf is good advice - a 997 won’t change the first 3 circumstances.

I just insured my R through Volkswagen themselves & it came in at £438- fully comp.
I will admit that I am not 19 however, I am early 40’s.
