I have been given a 2004 2.0 petrol beetle cab.
The issue it seems to have is the asr light stays on all the time (warning triangle inside a circlular arrow) and a very soft brake pedal. The brakes do work but only when the peddle is at the floor.
No abs lights or low fluid warnings. And no codes stored.
I have had a look at front brakes and discs are very rusty but pads are at around 50% i also rebled them but that has made no differance. Im yet to check back brakes.

The question is more about the asr light staying on. Has anyone come across this before?

Whats the fluid level like and are there any leaks.

Sorry fluid level is at max. And no signs of any leaks.
When i disconect level sensor the fluid level warning appears but when reconnected it goes off. So that seems to be working

I suspect you may have 2 (or possibly 3) problems, so treat them separately or you will only keep going round in circles.

The "long pedal"/soft brakes issue will be air in the braking system and needs bleeding properly, including the ABS system, if you don't have the gear to do it, take it to somewhere you trust to do it properly.

The warning light issue really needs the error code reading to see what the issue is rather than guessing that it is part of the same issue, because it won't be.

It also sounds like the car would benefit from new discs/pads & a bit of good old caliper maintenance & this could also be part of the "long pedal" issue you describe if a caliper is partly seized.

Rear discs and pads look brand new. Fronts are past it and need changed. The other thing with front brakes is pad wear wire has been cut and soldered together. But there is no wear warning on dash so kinda ruled that out

Only codes found was p0529 that was on autel machine and carly app. A snap on machine would not even connect to the car.

So the front brake issues you mention need sorting out before you go any further.

If you have a warning light illuminated, there will be codes stored for it, so you need to get it somewhere with better diagnostic equipment, as it will help diagnose the issue.

I was hopeing to try and get to bottom of asr issue before spending on brakes but the next step will be changing them and go from there.

Are you trying to auto select with snap on ? Try manual select. It should allow you to go into the abs and perform abs bleed.

Is the pedal pressure firm when the engine is on ? Have you tried bleeding the system ? Does the pedal go straight to the floor or gradually creep if you hold your foot on it ?

Snap on only got to 10% connected then connection failed. I will need to try and get a shot of it again when i have more time.

The pedal is soft when engine running, and goes straigh to floor. It will build slight pressure when pumped and engine off but drops when started.
I have only bled front 2 brakes so far. The rears are next.

Fault codes that come up now after having battery disconected

Goggle suggests codws mean a miss fire or broken wire.

Update. New front discs and pads. All corners bled and master cylinder bled.
Put on vag com and bleed abs unit. Light still on dash and no pedal.

So maybe master cylinder but no idea why light on. Drives fine apart from brake pedal.

Cars been moved on now anyways

I take it from that update, you didn't check what was bringing the light on then?

Pedal could be poor condition of fluid, when was it last completely changed?

Not sure but using tester was under 2% moisture.
And with bleeding all brakes over and over went through over a litre of fluid.

I think the asr/esp light is something to do with abs module/pump

1 litre isn't a large amount, I did a simple full brake system refresh & fluid change & used nearly the full 2 litres I always buy for the process.

The light is pretty much certainly a system fault, the brake pedal issue is almost certainly air from your description.
