I was considering selling my Land Rover and wanted to get a valuation. The enquiry came back saying that my car is apparently a Cat S write off on the MIAFTR register
But there is a problem with that:

1. the car has never been in an accident during its time with me (4 years)
2. the car was never in an accident with the original owner (I am the second)
3. according to MIAFTR register the loss occurred in 1999 - but that's 10 years before the car was even built and thus 10 years before the registration plate was issued.
4. the V5C makes no mention of a Cat S status (or any other status)
5. I ran a check when I bought the car and it was all clear at that point

I have written to MIAFTR to query the point, but in the experience of the PH Massive what is the likelihood that this error will be corrected?

Well given the event happened 10 years before the vehicle was built I'm fairly sure you'll get it sorted out without too much fight

No, its not. Its a bog standard reg number, although the first owner did have it on a private plate.

Total loss cats are attached via the VIN nothing to do with the VRM

out of interest. surely it cant be a cat S in 99. it would have been a cat C ? or are the new catagorys retrospective?

maybe thats another bit of ammo to point out the error ?

Correct that they are attached to the VIN but it will also show up on any car that subsequently carries that private plate, thus looking like it is the total loss.

Contact the insurance company listed on the register and ask them to instruct HPI to remove it etc etc and this should solve your problem or you could ask the insurance company to put it in writing to you that your vehicle is not the one in question and they have no interest in it.

Nope, if it's showing up as a CAT on a later car that is subsequently registered with the VRM of the total loss then it's an error and certainly not the norm

My money would be on whoever updated the register mistyping another registration of the car that is the actual write off.

I've had it before where the previous registration was on a recorded car and that got tied to the current car. Did you do an HPI or similar when you bought it?

Or, maybe do a check on the previous reg number and see if that ties up with the error?
