Mini roundabout right of way
Discussion
Hi there
I think it was my fault tbh. Mini roundabout , I saw a car indicating to turn from the right it but I sped up a bit to get over the line to enter the roundabout, or at least I think I got this far. The other car entered the roundabout and took his turning, forcing me to stop. I saw him, he didn't seem bothered or anything in fact he wasn't even looking towards me but I think I must have seen a dashcam.
A lot of mini roundabouts near me no one knows when to go so it's just a free for all, I fit was my fault in this one in hindsight I probably would have stopped. Regardless legally if he reports me how likely is any kind of police action and what would it be? I can't remember if my front wheels had actually crossed into the roundabout or not.

If you tried to pull out on a car coming from the right then you are in the wrong.I think it was my fault tbh. Mini roundabouts use the same rules as roundabouts, so it's wrong to say no one knows when to go. Almost every driver knows, or all roundabouts would be chaos.
If you stopped then I doubt anyone would do anything. You made a mistake but nothing happened. We all occasionally make a mistake.
Learn from it though, mini roundabouts are not a place try your luck.

What I meant was "Mexican stand offs" that usually happen at mini b roundabouts often. But this wasn't one of them. I can't remember if I was actually on the roundabout though when this guy turned but I'm pretty sure it was my fault. None.
I'm assuming you are a new driver...
At least you are thinking about your driving. Getting the balance between over confidence and excessive caution takes a while, keep on thinking and learning from each drive.
If you are really keen, then in 6 months have an hour with an advanced driving instructor. You'll learn loads and be a better driver for it.
So when someone asks what you want for your next birthday or Christmas the above would be my suggestion.
Hope that doesn't sound patronising/teaching you to suck eggs.

On a mini roundabout you give way to the right which means if somebody is approaching from that direction you shouldn't enter it. On a normal roundabout, whoever gets on first has priority so if you get on before the car approaching from the right they should slow down, being prepared to stop.
We all know in scenario 2 the driver approaching from the road to your right will probably steam in and beep their horn but that's life.

I thought the rules for roundabouts and mini roundabouts are exactly the same though in practise no.
i think as in reality there is nothing wrong and in fact a lot of merit in treating every roundabout like a mini roundabout. If somebody is coming from the right and looks like they're going to enter then its safer to hold back even if you should in reality have priority by entering first.AdeTuono said:

I know it was a dumb thing to do. What am I looking at.
Minimum 5 year driving ban, if not a custodial sentence. Lucky the death penalty doesn't stand. Are you thinking the guys going to bother downloading dashcam footage, send it to the police, then the police are going to bother to pursue it, find you and prosecute? Never mind Recently Passed, are you Recently Born? Absolutely nothing will happen, at all. Learn from it and move on.

nah seriously though what would it actually be. if he felt annoyed off and had a dashcam and reported. i thought i saw he had one he might not have.
As others have said it will be nothing, nadda, zip, you didn't commit a crime. You didn't give way quite as promptly as you could have, you didn't hit anyone, no-one died and no cats were killed.
Build a bridge & get over it.
Carry on with your life & learn that you aren't yet quite the driving god you may have thought.
Highway Code Rule 185
When reaching the roundabout you should
give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights
check whether road markings allow you to enter the roundabout without giving way. If so, proceed, but still look to the right before joining
watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all
look forward before moving off to make sure traffic in front has moved off.
.
Nothing will happen. I doubt the other driver will report the situation. It was really a non event. The police will not be interested.
Keep being self-aware, and maybe take an advance course when you feel able to.

The problem is there is vagueness, i.e. how is "approaching" defined. There are many roundabouts where the "approaching" car is quite a way from the roundabout so safe to manoeuvre. It's a judgment call from the driver to anticipate the speed the approaching car is going, how far away etc. and then decide accordingly. When reaching the roundabout you should
give priority to traffic approaching from your right
Then there's the dash cam idiots who don't slow down approaching a roundabout, or worse accelerate onto roundabout just to create an incident or to rage at other driver and post on YouTube

As above you give priority to the right BUT often this ends up in stalemate as everyone at every entry is giving way (I do not think there is a right of way - just priority)
So, when in stalemate you take the option to move first and proceed with caution - that is what I was taught 2 months ago when I took my motorbike test and had that exact thing happen on my test - we were at stalemate so I moved first - not a problem and shows confidence.
Just be cautious and polite and if it ends up with someone stopping then just do not react badly.
