I've a 2014 3 series currently subject to a recall for an airbag. Appointment was booked for this week however few days ago got a text message from dealer to say appointment cancelled due to no parts available and with no sign of more parts arriving they would contact me in future when available.

I'm going to call the dealer to discuss this but thought I'd get some opinions first. Should I a) suck it up and wait for parts to arrive in 1/3/8 months time or b) demand they put me in a loaner and keep hold of my car till dangerous faulty airbag is replaced?

You’ll just need to wait. It’s not the dealers fault or problem, they will be doing the work on behalf of BMW UK

You've driven this far with full trust in it and it's not gone wrong. Now the recall is out it won't suddenly break. Suck it up

Manufactures have to announce these recalls as soon as they know about them, they then need to step up production on the replacement part as they don’t typically produce/stock enough parts to cover every eventual recall. It’s natural that the supply doesn’t meet the demand in these cases.

As for loan cars, how many bays/ramps does your local dealership have? 10 maybe. Each of those bays may see 2 or more cars a day plus any cars that carry over to the next day waiting for parts or authorisation. Customers aren’t ‘One in, one out’ and they want their lon car as ready and waiting for them. You could already up to 20 loan cars a day.

How many cars have been recalled?
How many loan cars do you think BMW uk have available to them?

Appalling attitude from them.

How about a strongly worded email to someone?

Also helps getting your story in the Mail or some other quality newspaper.

I believe this recall is to do with some airbags deploying with too much force which can then push metal bits towards the driver's face. A lot of vehicles are involved in this recall so it's probably unrealistic to expect a loan car to magically appear.
Mind you, over in the USA a "Do Not Drive" notice was issued for the cars on the list, but they do tend to get a little excitable over there.

If you're concerned either unplug the airbag but you will lose any protection it might offer in the event of it requiring to be deployed, or note that there might be a small risk of having a cut face as a side effect of not headbutting the steering wheel, or don't crash.
I'd recommend the last one on a continuing suggestion.

My 2002 330 Touring had this recall a year ago. Local dealer kindly made a long video of the underside and told me of all the stuff that needed fixing as well smile

I think the metal shards will do that won’t they? When, the minute after the appointment was booked for, the airbag goes off in an unexpected and violent manner?

Had my airbag recall cancelled twice due to part shortages with Toyota, took around 18 months from receiving the letter to actually getting the airbag replaced. Didn't really bother me much to be honest.

Can't really be that serious or else they would be focusing all their man power on trying to produce replacements as quick as possible.

That being said, a year after the replacement, the car was involved an accident where all the airbags blew, so who knows.

Whilst I'm not overly hysterical that my faulty airbag may or may not cause me an issue, it is a safety recall and therefore should be treated with urgency. However having seen the level of tripe that often gets posted on PH I was half expecting the usual original remarks about daily mail, compensation face blah blah and it turns out I wasn't let down 😂

Anyway, I will call the dealer tomorrow and see what they say
