Toyota Celica ST | Shed of the Week

Not the most exciting Celica. But perfect for the seasoned shed-finder

Something old and blue this week, and we’re not talking about Shed’s Bristol Rovers bobble hat. The sixth generation Celica was built between 1993 and 1999. This example is an ST, or AT200 in Toyota-speak. The only other gen-six Celica to come Shed’s way in the last ten-plus years was a red GT, or ST202 as it was never called by anyone other than marque nerds.

The GT had a 2.0-litre 3S four with 173hp, whereas today’s ST has just 114hp from its 7A 1.8 and would struggle to break into a single figure time for the 0-60mph run, compared to low eights for the GT. Quite a difference, but Shed says the fact that this car still exists at all is a good enough reason to feature it, and given the mood he’s in these days we’re not about to argue with him.

This model was more of a liftback than a hatchback, but ramming your Colnago in there won’t necessarily be the sweaty exercise you might imagine. A poster on the 2015 GT forum claimed he could get a fully-assembled road bicycle into the back of his AT200, or a medium mountain bike with the front wheel off. He also said that he got perfectly controllable lift-off oversteer around an off-camber roundabout, presumably with a set of Lingalonga Ditchfinders fitted for extra slideyness. Not bad for a 114hp front-driver though, if true, and with a weight of well under 1.1 tonnes you’re not going to cause much damage to anything you crash into, apart from yourself maybe.

The gen-six Celica was notable for its smoothly rounded Supra/Soarer looks which, Shed ventures to suggest, still seem fresh thirty years on. That wasn’t what some forum posters thought in 2015 when that red GT hit their screens though, and there’ll doubtless be some naysayers this time around too. Very few of these haven’t rotted away but this one looks – repeat, looks – very solid with just a few bits of paint missing from the front end. It sits well on its springs, has only done 114,000 miles and boasts nicely unworn front seats. The rears are a bit grubby but Shed’s column is used to that. This Celica has even managed to retain its original Toyota radio. Bet it sounds right tinny, but the radio on its own is probably worth a few bob to restorers striving for originality.

Some rear-end rust was noted in the 2021 MOT test but that was mended in time for its most recent test in October ’22, when the only advisory was for ‘rear most suspension component, anti-roll and trial arm corrosion’. We asked Shed to translate that, but the two minutes he signalled it would take him to get back to us is long past now and he’s still not said anything. In the absence of any advice to the contrary, we’re going to say that they’re replaceable consumables and nothing to worry about.

If your needs are for something that’s a bit different, that will be cheap to run (around 32mpg average, 14-inch tyres), that will hardly ever break down and that’s highly unlikely to depreciate any further, then this £1,295 Celica could well be the solution. If you can keep it going, who knows, it might end up being worth as much as a coke-bottle gen-one Celica from the early 1970s. Original examples of those are going for over £30k now, and like Shed says, they ain’t building any more.

It's already sold. Someone's won the lottery (lottery blue shed, that is)

Colour and style are a big YES, not so much the 1.8.

Not a surprise at all. Assuming there are no major gremlins hidden, this has to be the bargain of the year. It will never be worth less than £1295. Any old school Toyota with a decent MOT is worth this in the current climate, let alone something interesting like a Celica.

+1 I really like the colour. And the T20 Celica has always been a good looking car. Makes for a nice change in the sea of white; grey; black euroboxes and SUVs.

Great shed!

2.0 GT?

GT-Four ST205 holds the most appeal, used to be cheap back in the day.

Fond memories of these, particularly as the Dealer Principal's stunning wife used to drive one in this colour... cloud9

Great choice, I’ve not seen one of these for ages.

I prefer the Honda Prelude from this era but the Celica, especially in this colour, still looks brilliant.

Great shed, best for a long time. Something about the front end reminds me of Thunderbird 2. If only it was drab olive green!

Lovely! Perfect first “sporty” car for a 21-year-old just moving on from the Seat Mii they learned in, or a perhaps ice useable classic for someone.

Top shedding!

Loved the shape of these - perhaps more so now as it’s just beautifully curved ( can I say almost feminine ..........?) as opposed to today’s garish slashes and creases

Wow, that’s an amazing find. Haven’t seen one in years.
Looks great in that colour and has aged very well. Probably a bit dull to drive but fits the bill for an interesting ‘modern classic’.

Brilliant find, it’s telling it has sold already. Simple mechanicals in an old Japanese car that looks stunning - right up my street. Bonus of no (visually obvious) rust either. Some proactive rust removal and waxoyl underseal on the sills and subframes, plus replacement of the advised arms/bushes/links and this will go on for many more years.

A great deal. You get on your banking app, transfer barely four figures, and shortly thereafter you can say "I drive a Celica". Look after it and in 5 or 10 years, with little expenditure you can still be saying it. Best of luck to the buyer.

That looks a pretty but (not surprised that it’s already sold). Like other posters, I can’t remember the last time I saw one.

The wrong engine, but definitely the right car though for sure. I've always liked these a lot. A mate of mine had the GT4 version and I always enjoyed driving that. A nice blast from the past this is I reckon.

Been a long time since I saw one of these on the roads and an even longer time with regards to the drop top version. Dare say the prices will rise as the ST182/185's are. ST205 would be lovely if also getting quite rare. Sticks to the road like glue as well.

In an interesting parallel, about 15 years ago I bought a 15 years older than this RA60 Celica 2.0XT shed for $1000. It was brilliant and gave a few years of trouble-free shedding before I discarded it to ‘upgrade’. And, had I bothered keeping the body in decent Nick, would be worth decent money now.

Wow had to look twice at the Reg plate. Guy down the road from me has the exact twin of this car. I always take a second look at it as i walk past with the dog. They do look well proportioned & were built much better than the Calibra's of the day. Top Shed bit of a bargain i reckon!

Huge boot on these, without the 4WD the floor is much lower. For someone who isn't that bothered about performance, the quality, durability, practicality and looks of this for £1300 is a real win.
