Personally think there's more chance of seeing Liam Lawson in that seat. The whole purpose of Alpha Tauri is to blood young drivers for Red Bull, there wouldn't be any benefit for either party if Ricciardo pottered around in P10 for the rest of the season. Ricciardo wants a top table team.

Lets face it they've got history in this kind of thing and as much as I like him, de Vries has been underwhelming.

Makes sense to have Ricci warmed up on half a season and to see if he can "fall back in love" with F1 should the impossible return to RB be completed.

I think its a classic 2+2=5 story. Riccardo is the official reserve driver for both Red Bull and Alpha Tauri. Imola is coming up and the AT factory is close by. Makes perfect sense to pop in for a seat fitting in case he is needed.

Its probably also a good boot to kick De Vries with to try and get him to up his game.

Ah, would love to see LL. He was severely screwed during F2 with team mistakes and other drivers.

Except DR is not a reserve driver at all. He is the third (test) driver for Red Bull, Liam Lawson is one of the three reserve drivers. Alpha Tauri do not have a reserve driver of their own.

Of those multiple 'reserve' drivers, only Lawson and Ricciardo have a full Super Licence, so they are the only ones who are really the reserves for the regular race drivers. As such DR is the nominated reserve for a handful of races while LL is unavailable when his commitments racing in Japanese Super Formula clash with F1 events. Imola this week is one such event.

So of course it makes sense to get your reserve driver a proper seat fitting at the factory, which can take hours and when he’s in the country anyway, rather than trying to improvise something at short notice if the regular driver gets sick or injured. He probably spent the rest of the day in the sim, learning all the buttons.

F1 teams turning out to be rather good at planning and logistics, isn’t really news though.

The car is so good they don't even need the old fast Daniel to at least play 2nd fiddle if perez throws a hissy fit.
