best large reliable SUV for towing what fuel?
Discussion
I have started looking at a Large SUV for towing but the choices are not very easy. Firstly I wanted a Range Rover of Defender but I have been put off by stories of them getting stolen and expensive insurance. I also Heard the engines can be unreliable due to blocked DBF filters. What fuel? first choice would be diesel but as we know diesel is being phased out and I can see city centres banning them in the not so distance future. Are hybrids powerful enough to tow and would towing anything reduce battery life and make batteries pointless. A big petrol would be lovely but even though petrol is cheaper to buy economy would be terrifying. Any thoughts on a good SUV that would not break down, would be allowed into cities and not get stolen in a city?
I would have thought a diesel Tuareg would be up there. Nothing fancy about them but they're good solid cars, built by the hundreds or thousands. And they're bad spec Lamborghinis at the end of the day. Probably the only way to try and future proof a big ICE SUV would be a hybrid but I'm not sure you still won't risk getting clobbered for having the wrong sort of hybrid.
Nothing really beats a Range Rover at this game but the risk of getting one of the Friday editions is very unappealing if you just want an easy life.

Recently purchased a 2014 Touareg R-Line to replace a V6S F-Pace. Inexpensive, reliable and goes under the radar. Has a great towing capacity as well….
What was the F-Pace like? I like the new ones and to my eyes like mini Range Rovers inside. However they do share the JLR engines and presumably the remote control software for the keys. Jumpingjackflash said:

It looked and sounded lovely. Sadly the quality was not as expected though with various electrical gremlins and things like cheap leather, surface corrosion in the rear arches, poor dealer service etc etc and all on a 3 year old car with 18k miles. In short I’d probably never have another JLR vehicle which is a shame as I have a soft sport for the new Defender 130
I looked at a Defender 130 but they have a large hump in the boot which would stop easy and smooth loading. If I was buying again I’d go for a Touareg.
2 months ago I bought an extremely well maintained and cared for L322 4.4TDV8. It lasted all of 1.5 days and it’s been in the mechanics since. Just bad luck but in all honestly you need to mentally prepare yourself for a Range Rover. When they are good they can’t be beaten, but when they go wrong. . . .

Can you tow with a Lexus? If so, no brainer if reliability is your main criteria. Beautifully put together too, rx450 se-l 7 seater for me.
Mine has a factory fitted tow , no idea what the capacity is or if any good for towing biggbn said:

What about the big Mercedes SUV’s? I did search for a land cruiser but they are not very desirable and can be expensive. A few mentions for the VW so I might look at the Cayenne equivalent. I understand the VW will be cheaper but I also want something desirable which maybe says more about my insecurities lol.
