Hi,

I've got the common (from looking at all the threads!) problem of the speedo sensor playing up.

I've phoned the local dealer to ask about it and they say I'll need a new sensor which is fair enough. The price for replacement seemed a bit steep though - £266. Is this in line with what others have paid? I noticed the part itself was quoted as being £82 and they said it would take a few hours to fit?

In the mean time can I just remove the fuse for the speedo? It's jumping around all over the place and I don't want to damage the speedo dial / add extra miles (226 mph! standing still).

I suspect I might have had some influence on it's demise as I was washing all the cow crap of the bottom of the car with the hosepipe afer a 1000 mile trip around SW Scotland - car was awesome!

Thanks in advance.

Strange they diagnosed it as needing a new
one over the phone? When mine started playing
up the dealer cleaned it and reset the gap on
the sensor and it has been fine ever since.

I had one fitted at my last svc. It was £82.65 for the sensor + vat and fitting, part no. M1889.

Thanks everyone. I have decided not to take it to the local main dealer after all your replies.

I now have it booked in with an independent in Stockport on Thursday. I'll let you know how I get on.

Well just got the word that the car is ready.

£51 in total. That's a saving of £215 over what the main dealer quoted me for the work.

All it needed was the air gap resetting.

Thanks to everyone for your help with this.

Spoke too soon.........

Got there, key in ignition to leave..... speedo starts telling me I'm doing 50,124,220,45,100 etc etc. without the engine even running.

What a pain in the a***, so now got to take it back again.

Also to top it off when I got home there now seems to be a leak of oil of some sort from dripping from the front left corner of the car.

:-(

Now makes me wonder if the speedo problem is something to do when it gets wet.

Going up to the BNG Saturday it was raining cats and dogs on the motorway and suddenly my speedo stated 226 MPH, whilst I was stationery in a jam.

Never happened before car 14 months old, biggest issue was that in the last 30 miles it stuck 150 miles on the speedo mileometer.

Tried switching off/on etc but was the same, Sunday morning nothing so drove the 160 miles home but no increment on my speedo.

Does anyone know where the speedo sensor is so that i can have a look, possibly reset and clean.

Speedo Sensor sits just behind rear left hand drive shaft close to the diff - it actually reads from a splined ring fitted onto the drive shaft - WARNING - this is extremely sensitive and should only be tackled on a lift with the rear end jacked up so the wheels can turn - had mine done twice - me in the cockpit pressing the loud pedal while the engineer adjusted the sensor - really crappy arrangement and they all give trouble from time to time.

Many thanks will have a look at it, hoping it is just adjustment but will all the rain on Saturday when it went faulty I wonder if this may be the cause.

Edited to say;-

Tracked it down to the plug in connector in the boot just above the rear axle, basically the connector was not snapped together properly and had worked its way out (vibration due to sports exhaust?).

Pushed back in and locked together speedo behaving properly, worth looking at if anyone else's is playing up
