If you come off the M42 at J9 and go up the A446 past the Belfry Golf Club onto the A38 then up the A5 there are no speed limit signs at all from J9 to the A5 but there are 2 speed cameras.
If the road is De-restricted (60 mph for cars, 40 mph for trucks ) why don`t they put a national speed limit applys sign up.
The A446 also has a ghost island for the full length of it just to confuse you even more.

AFAIK it's always been a 60...and AFAIK, if there're no limit signs at all then it's automatically NSL.

At least, I'm sure that's what it says in the Highway Code.

BTW - "ghost island"??? Not been there for about a year, but used to do it quite a lot - what do you mean?

Ghost island is a central area of hatchings with dotted lines marking the border. Placed there on purpose to confuse motorists in to not overtaking.

A prime example is the A4074 just south of Oxford - excellent overtaking spot, closed down by the council and compliant numpties

A long time ago a policeman told me that they put up De-restricted signs rather than 60mph signs in the hope that some people will not know what the national limit is and so will air the side of caution and slow everybody else down.
Maybe the cops don`t want signs on this stretch of road for the same reason.

More likely to be the council numpties rather than the police...

Rule 73: Areas of white diagonal stripes or white chevrons painted on the road are to separate traffic streams liable to be a danger to each other or to protect traffic turning right. Do not drive over these areas if you can avoid doing so. Where the chevron has a solid white edge line you must not enter the area except in an emergency.

As I read it, you just need to check that the edge line isn't solid. If it isn't, then these stupid nanny-state distractions can be completely ignored and overtaking is entirely legal, despite what the moaning greeny-weenies might wish.....

I know exactly where you mean. However, I have also been unable to establish the speed limit. Like most drivers on the road i slow to 40 in order to get past the cameras.

Absence of a system of streetlighting, or repeaters, you can assume NSL. The ghost island does not make it dual carriageway (must be a physical barrier) so 60.

The repeater spacings are not prescribed in law, so could be quite distant. Streetlighting could be a lot of things (lights from things adjacent to the road might count).

In the world of esoteric road law, it *could* be a 30 -- a road made restricted by Order without streetlighting. That would be rude, but perfectly legal (and would require no start signs, in law, and repeaters would be prohibited). However, that would need to be made restricted by an Order, and would be rare.

The dashed bordered hatching just means don't enter unless necessary and safe. If you go in there and don't cause an accident / other car to brake / alter course, then you should be fine in law.

That particular camera is there to catch the Truckies. It`s a heavily used route from the M42 to the distribution hubs near Fradley Park and Branston. Limit for heavies is 40mph

Simple answer to the problem - make the M6 toll free for trucks to the first junction. Keep all those wagons away from single carriageway roads.

More twaddle above courtesy of whoever.

The reasons NSL signs are used is because the NSL varies depending upon the type of vehicle being used.

The limit on a SC might be 60 for cars motorcycles and car derived vans up to 2 tonnes max laden weight but its less for other vehicles. To display a 60 would be confusing to drivers of other vehicles, see this link

Arguably the line around the hatching has to be solid in order to qualify as a ghost island.
