I have been thinking of upgrading my video editing software since all I have atm is the woeful Windows Movie maker which is just far too limited.

I used to have copies of the earlier versions of Premiere and Photoshop (PS5.5 and 6) which were fine. However I lost the installation CDs long ago and so lost these programs when I switched to a new laptop. So far I have been getting by on Paint Shop Pro 7 which I use mainly for its excellent browse function when sorting through my extensive digital photo collection. It also seems to do about 90% of the stuff I used to do with Photoshop, though really for proper image manipulation I prefer Photoshop and used to run both of these programs side by side.

Anyway its coming to the point where I need to upgrade my video editing software and Premiere Elements seems to fit the bill, it doesn't have all the capability of the full version but I think it will be enough for my mucking about, especially since its significantly cheaper. Most of the reviews have been fairly positive.

But I have also been meaning to get Photoshop back on my machine and noticed that Adobe are offering a bundle pack of Premiere and Photoshop Elements for around 70-80pounds. But I haven't been that impressed with any of the reviews of Elements and I don't think it would offer a huge advantage over PSP7, in fact I was thinking it might be worth tracking down an older copy of Photoshop since I know they do everything I need and since they are superceeded shouldn't cost the earth.

Anyone have any comments on the Elements versions? Affordable alternatives or cheap trash?

I have/know all of that lot. One thing you didn't mention is what version of windoze movie maker you are using. 2 is miles better than 1. Worth upgrading. But, as you say, not in the same league as Premier.

As for Elements, I'd stick with PSP7 - it's really only things like greyscaling that Elements will do better than PSP.

I also like the PSP thumbnail cataloguing - but have to say that Photoshop CS has finally caught up in that regard.

So - not much help I guess... but there we go.

I have moviemaker 2, not sure how bad v1 was since i never even noticed it was there until after I had service pack 2 installed.

Think I might give PS Elements a miss then, I will probably get Premiere though.
