I'm looking at a 2nd hand D70 at the moment, it has been used by a pro for 6 months (since new) and it has clocked up 3000 pics, is this good or bad? It is £450 with a 18-70 lens etc etc, uk spec, boxed.

3000 pics is nothing at all to worry about. I must have taken tens of thousands on the D1x and it shows no sign of age (except for the battered exterior!)

I got my D70 in May this year, and have taken over 3000 pics so far...I've had no major probs whatsoever...and no dust problems either!

I've had my D50 about 3 weeks now .... and must have well over 2k of photos so far (unfortunately only a handful of good ones).

1 problem with a spec of dirt, which kinda scuppered my Silverstone pics - but as I'd not taken that many good ones anyway ....

If the seller is reputable, go for it. I've had mine for just over a year and am up to about 5,300.

I deduce you only have one lens!

I've got a D70 -- is there a photo counter in the camera or something? I must have missed it...

My Nikon counts the pics by files names, and doesn't seem to have a reset switch. dscn8026 after 1½ years and counting

2 lenses so far...but I don't switch them that often...I'm dreading the day I do get some dust on the sensor though!

if you have "File No. Sequence" under the set up menu set to "on" and havent re-set or turned it off, the filename should represent the number of photo's taken eg DCS_3069.nef/jpg.

Without wishing to turn this into another dog thread (doh) Our last two (almost certainly related to your nutters): Beans & Chips... at Beans' 7th birthday party (before digital cameras)

Other than the file naming method, is there something else internal that indicates how many frames have been taken and/or other salient service information?

I seem to recall reading information (not sure which camera) about how to change the file naming convention to help with indentifying shots for different subject or shoots. Can't recall where or which camera and I have not found anything related to that in the manual for my little Pentax- but then that does not always cover features in depth.

Is the bearded collie well known as a breed good at posing for photographs? Spill the beans Steve, do you just fire these off, or do you sit for ages waiting for the dogs to do what they are supposed to?

Beardies are just bloody show offs and will do anything to stay in the limelight. Some of them will also do anything (up to and including reciting poetry) for a crisp.

In the case of these two, the black one did anything for a crisp and the brown one did anything the black one did.

With the D70, you can create and rename folders so that you can manage your photos.

I wanted to change the filenames on mine but not possible...
"The manner in which the camera determines file names or numbers cannot be manually altered (for example to differentiate one camera from another) as the system must be compliant with the Digital Camera industry standard code called the "Design Rule for Camera Format."

Depending who you listen to, MTBF for a D70 shutter is anywhere between 30k and 50k shots, higher models up to 150k.

With the emphasis on "mean" it's hardly done anything.
