Afternoon all. I find myself in an unfamiliar position so am hoping to benefit from some collective wisdom on here as I often have before.

I have a car which I need to sell. I have solely driven company or lease cars for the past 20 years so have no experience in selling a privately owned vehicle.

It's a 69 plate Golf R estate with a few options. 53k and FSH. I have done LOTS of research into selling to WBAC, motorway, cazoo etc, and am very tempted given the relative ease when compared to what a private sale can throw up.

However, I would like to get a very good idea of how much extra I might be able to sell for privately. I have looked at those for sale in auto trader and the prices seem a bit all over the place so I was left none the wiser.

Could anybody recommend the best place to get an accurate estimate for private sale? I can then weigh up whether it's worth the potential hassle of tyre kickers or worse.

Many thanks as always for any guidance.

When you put numberplate and mileage in to autotrader, it has a suggested asking price for a private sale

Probably somewhere around £25k - £27k depending on condition & spec

Edit: what are Cazoo, wbac et al offering?

The main issue with car of that value is finding a buyer willing to stump up over £20k for a private sale. It's the reason so many traders offer finance / PCP on used cars.

You'll get plenty who'll want to part-ex with you I expect. frown

Hpivaluations.com

It'll give you the CAP prices used by traders, and provides what should be a fairly accurate private, trade and forecourt price.

Largely an internet myth.

Can't think why it would be a problem its hardly an expensive car.

Priced right it will sell no problem.

Sold my 2018 991.2 GT3 CS for £143500 cash a couple of weeks back without even advertising. Price even exceeded OPCs.

Plenty of cash buyers around.

The right cars will always sell at the right money irrespective of price.

Thanks so much for all the replies so far. WBAC are offering £22k, cazoo the same.

Ultimately it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it via a private sale.

There's no real data available on private sale transaction prices, unlike trade sales. The best accessible source is probably sold prices on ebay.

Cazoo typically stick 15-20% mark up on what they pay for trade, so if they're paying £22k they'll retail around £26k and drop it if it doesn't sell.

I'd list it privately at £24k and see what happens. If the phone rings off the hook pull the advert and put it back up at £25k, if you get no joy after a week reduce by £500 until you do.

It is a limited market for cash buyers willing to pay north of £20k for a private sale and given what your selling I suspect you'll get lots of lots of questions around best price and be addressed as "bruv" by a significant proportion of potential buyers who will never pay the asking price for anything. Then flogging it off to a trader for a bit less will seem like a much better idea.

Good luck!

Unfortunately a Golf R is definitely one of those cars I wouldn't fancy the majority of prospective of coming to visit my home.

Make sure your description is correct for the WBAC valuation - include all damage. Check the number of previous owners is correct as it often defaults to 5.

Then make the appointment and take their money. You really do not want to be involved in trying to sell an R privately.

PS - I have used them three times in the past year for cars worth over £20k. In the first two cases they were by far the best offers - in the third one they were spot on but a trader offered me £150 more so it went to the trader.

There is one 2019 Golf R Estate with 50-60k miles for sale on Autotrader, and it's £24,995 from a VAG dealer with a 2 year warranty.

Based on that £22k for a very quick and easy sale to Motorway/Cazoo seems a decent deal as you'll struggle to get £23k+ selling privately with no warranty, dealer facilities, finance or comeback in comparison I'd suggest?

Thanks so much again for all of the replies. Taking everything into consideration, I've booked WBAC over the weekend. Couldn't be doing with the possible stress of the private sale!

Thanks again

Good for you, try finding a buyer for a TVR Cerbera 4.5. This was before the pandemic, it took over 2 months and I had to accept a part-ex. Only 2 people came to view it in that time and it wasn't expensive compared to dealers (£22k). frown

I can highly recommend Motorway - sold our BMW 430d xdrive through them - they were £2,400 more than WBAC, kept in the loop all the way through, no haggling when collecting car. It even beat their reserve price by £350.

I did consider motorway, but weighing everything up went with WBAC. Had appointment today, got chopped £300 for some dents and chips which was probably fair enough.

Was very quick and painless, money will be in the bank Monday. I will miss the car for sure, next owner will be very happy with it.

Thanks again all for taking the time to offer advice, very much appreciated.

Do remember that with WBAC you are selling to them direct. Motorway and Carwow are middlemen.

Anyway well done OP and glad you got a good result.
