Help from garage owner - ripped of on discs and pads
Discussion
Hi I recently used whocanfixmycar to get a quote for a disc and pad replacement. I had a few similar quotes from various garages about £500 and went for a slightly cheaper quote with one of the chains £ 350. I got a call from the garage saying the job was 840£. As the car was already on the ramp and they advertise a price match guarantee I paid them. I am now told that to honour their price match they need to see a quote from another garage. They won’t accept webuuanycar quotes as proof. My car is a 2006 Jaguar xkr. I wanted to check views in terms of cost to do the brakes and advice on how to proceed with my complaint. Thanks

Why don't you send them the quote you'd already got from elsewhere?Did they say why it was so much? I assume it had gone from a quote for just pads to pads, disks, sliders/springs/shims etc?
Just front brakes or front and rear?
A quick check of ECP shows it'd cost a little under £300 for the front discs and pads using a reasonable brand like Brembo, and maybe £150 for the rears.
Stick some labour on there and a bit of margin on the parts themselves, and I can see it being £500 for the fronts without taking the piss.
£840 sounds high, but I think telling them to proceed and expecting to price match it down afterwards (which is how I read your post) was a mistake.
Why did you do that? I would have thought you'd at least have had the discussion about price matching then.
Did they offer an explanation for more than doubling their quote?

'Quote' or 'estimate'?
If you went with the £350 garage & they then rang you & said that they were going to charge you £840 to do the job the time to have said 'No thanks' or 'Why has your price more than doubled from what you told me?' was when they rang you.
Not 'Ok go ahead' after they'd told you the new price.
Their line will be that they told you & you agreed to it so they did the job.
Good luck.

I'm sure we've not had the sequence of events laid out properly for us. Little point in trying to comment without moe info from OP as to what actually happened. As has been said accepting a bigger price hoping to "price match" it down after the fact is pretty daft if that's what's actually happened.

Exactly, if you agreed to the work @ the higher price I cannot see how you can at a later date try and get a lower price, doubt they will even listen If you went with the £350 garage & they then rang you & said that they were going to charge you £840 to do the job the time to have said 'No thanks' or 'Why has your price more than doubled from what you told me?' was when they rang you.
