Drinking alcohol before having surgery

What are the rules on this?
I’ve had info sent saying no food 6 hours before, no water a couple of hours before etc but there’s no mention of alcohol.
A couple of drinks the night before, is that ok or certain death?

I think it thins your blood so perhaps not a good move. I assume it may affect coagulation. No expert though.

And OP you know the right answer. One night off really shouldn't be an issue and if it is then well, that's an issue.

It’s not. Had one bottle of beer at lunch. Just wondered really, no big deal.

From an anaesthetic point of view a couple of drinks the night before isn't too much of an issue. You wouldn't want to have more than that otherwise your post-anaesthetic hangover will be miserable.

However, if you really can't cope without those drinks then you you should worry about alcohol dependence. If you think that you may be alcohol dependent please tell your doctors because post-op alcohol withdrawal is really unpleasant and we could give some medication to mitigate the effects

I'm definitely not, would just usually have wine with dinner on a Friday, but didn't have to.
