Hi,

Has anyone fitted amber grill lights to their vehicle and if so did you delclare it to your insurer and if so what insurer do you use?

A PLAN insurance have checked and stated that they are only legal on breakdown / construction vehicles, which I believe is utter nonsense as regardless of whether it's a personal vehicle or not, the regulations state any vehicle working on the highway must display them. I see many lightbars etc fitted to all sorts of vehicles such as Landrover Discovery, Mitsubishi L200 etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Why do you want to fit them?

Are you driving a highways maintenance vehicle?

As mere members of the public who don’t sleep with one eye on the phone on Christmas day night, totally sober, we can’t advise I’m afraid. frown

Seriously though, if your insurer says no and it’s on record, probably best not to do it.

Wasn't my insurer, just a prospective broker who clearly hasn't got a clue.

ignore the trolls who come out whenever 4x4 Response is mentioned... wink
I would simply check with the group you belong to as to what others have found... if in doubt just get a magnetic fitting roof bar and that is enough - you can buy very simple ones which will do all you need - it is useful to have the car visible, but you don't need to be lit up like a Christmas tree!

I can see why they state that as the road vehicles lighting regulations state:

27. No person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road any vehicle on which any lamp, hazard warning signal device or warning beacon of a type specified in an item in column 2 of the Table below is used in a manner specified in that item in column 3.

7 Warning beacon emitting amber light

Used so as to be lit except–

(i)at the scene of an emergency;
(ii)when it is necessary or desirable to warn persons of the presence of the vehicle; and
(iii)in the case of a breakdown vehicle, while it is being used in connection with, and in the immediate vicinity of, an accident or breakdown, or while it is being used to draw a broken-down vehicle.

Although you could argue for point (ii) however as there’s one specifically for recovering vehicles I’d have thought that would supersede (ii)?
