Hi All,

What is the most economical top lane commuter car?

For reference, I have to drive 230 miles on a Friday and return on the Saturday.....two things are important for me....comfort and economy. That's 460 return journey!

Currently my 2007 C320cdi returns 40mpg consistently....and that is with me being in the top lane most of the time...it had a 7g box and plenty of grunt...

So can anything else better this for a £5-7k budget?

If economy matters then a 3.2 litre diesel is not the answer.

BUT

If your current wagon is problem free, then what value do you put on a “known” car?

For a decent mix of comfort and economy, your typical 2.0 diesel Mondeo/Passat etc will take some beating. Plenty around for your budget. I'd probably try and get a decent spec manual Passat.

We had one, SE spec, rode brilliantly on 16” wheels and averaged over 70mpg on the motorway, averaged 64mpg over the 100k miles we had it

Definite tones of "Dominating Lane 3 / making progress / 100 leptons" and all that stuff - though strangely that demographic don't usually seem too bother about MPG whilst bullying everybody else out the way. I'd have said a Range Rover / Ranger / Amarok would be ideally suited or perhaps a slightly battered Merc Sprinter. Whatever it is it absolutely needs freaking' laser headlights. Or blue strobes.

If economy is important, spend more time in the bottom lane.

“top lane”…?

This is exactly the kind of 🔔🔚 phrase I’ve come to expect from folk who own a “premium” car brand and then expect to live in the outside lane just because of the badge.

It’s so depressing how self conscious we are in the UK. Just drive what you want, literally no one you drive past will care.

Before everyone flames him, top lane according to urban dictionary, means something no one else knows about or is unaware of.

In the context of his post that could make sense….

I'd suggest a BMW 730d. That should be good for doing that top lane thing.

Mondeo no good as it can't enter the German only top lane.

Mondeo is actually perfect for all the other lanes though

Land rover defender with the diesel engine.

I know they don't have the best rep, but trust me, this will work well.
