Audi RS3 saloon (8V) | Spotted

Audi Sport is officially 40; who's up for an appropriately understated birthday present?

It’d be easy to look upon Audi celebrating 40 years of Audi Sport - or just quattro GmbH, as it emerged in October 1983 - at the Nurburgring as a cynical marketing ploy. Everybody knows the ‘ring, and it’s never more popular than N24 weekend - job jobbed for some anniversary promo. But that would be doing its motorsport achievements a disservice: in the GT3 era of the Nurburgring 24-Hour, an R8 has taken six overall victories and three additional GT3 class wins at the endurance epic, making Audi the most successful manufacturer (even if Ferrari rained on its parade this year).

It only seemed right to mark the big Audi Sport 4-0 with our own celebration, too. It had to be a five-cylinder car, of course, because here would the four rings be without their five-pot fascination? We’re playing to glory days past in some capacity, too, with a very muted but very fast Audi saloon like they used to make. And which certainly aren’t going to happen any longer. It’s - drum roll, please - an RS3 saloon.

It's a specific RS3 saloon, however, and more interesting than some might give it credit for. Most notably it’s not the most recent version, the best-driving RS3 that’s now off-sale. It’s a proper riot, but with its cheap interior and OTT looks the 8Y generation isn’t without its drawbacks. The fact that this is a four-door RS3 is notable at all is because it was actually only introduced later in the old 8V’s life: there were a couple of hatch-only years from 2015. The 2017 update was more than the introduction of a boot up the backside, too, with the 2.5-litre turbo overhauled for 33hp more and 26kg less plus further revisions to the Quattro all-wheel drive. It still wasn’t deeply thrilling to drive, but it was improved - the 2017-on RS3 is the one you want from that era.

But only before the filters, of course. The RS3 was taken off sale in 2018 for a petrol particulate filter to be fitted and keep it compliant with the incoming Euro 6b emissions rules. It was back in showrooms in 2019 as broadly the same car with identical power and torque, but the warble had been muffled, never to return. This saloon is on a 67 plate, so the sonic signature of the five-cylinder should be alive and well.

Gets better, too. It’s an Audi RS car that isn’t grey, black, or white, which is cause for celebration, and on silver wheels as well. The glass isn’t tinted, magnetic ride has been optioned on and even the rear badge is gone; to very nearly everybody, this is just another A3 saloon, not a 400hp Audi Sport rocket. Which is quite cool. The interior is similarly subdued, and we’d take that all day over flashy.

The RS3 now sits on 47,000 miles, with three Audi dealer services to its name and a new MOT to come when it’s sold. The £35,995 asking price is comparable with similar cars (there are only a couple of facelifted cars at less than £35k) and it looks in good order for six years of driving. Maybe not the most exciting birthday gift ever, but then 40 is quite a grown-up celebration. And it looks like perfect transport for next year’s N24.

I’m torn on these. I think they’re crackingly proportioned, great looking wee cars, but they’re tarnished for me by the fact the few locally are all driven by idiots, idiotically. A sweeping generalisation based on a small, but honestly accurate evidence pool.

Audi definitely got both the hatch and saloon bang on. infact maybe the RS3 looks better as the saloon.

A neighbour has a 67 plate hatch RS3 in the same blue and another has a black saloon . The black saloon RS3 looks far better. I'd go as far to say.the Saloon RS3 is the best looking Audi ever.

Agreed.

The RS3 reminds me that, when some on here say the Germans don't match the Koreans for style, the Asians still some way to go; this saloon is the compact car gold standard aesthetically IMO.

To these eyes it does. They have done a great job with these, IMO.

The new ones look a bit too fussy, there's a lot going on, but this is just the right level of understated, given the performance on tap. cool

I was looking to replace my Fk8 after 5 years of ownership with a cliché nardo grey hatch, but a used one of these is an absolute minefield lottery. Many have been 'staged' within an inch of their lives by owners who want the best draggy times then move them on to next owner when its about to go bang. The forums are full of differentials shattering, engines throwing rods, swapped out engines, stolen. Put me right off tbh

I had a lowly S3 saloon from new between late 2016 and late 2019 and it was a lovely drive, a bit dull, but as an overall package it was fantastic. Add in the 5-cyl burble and better driving dynamics and I'd imagine that the RS3 saloon is indeed fantastic.

I'd have one in a heartbeat.

Always preferred the saloon proportions. However.
Test drove a few over the years, and always found them fast as anything but numb, like it wouldn't matter if I was 12 and only had a Gran Turismo B licence, I'd be just as fast and involved.
I was driving back from Manchester last week, and was in front of the most tatty, unloved white 8V hatch, which then overtook me following an ambulance, classy. Then every opportunity it was leaving a gap to the cars in front and booting it at random. I fear this is just that kind of car

Not sure why the article marks down the 8v has having a ‘cheap interior’. I’ve got an 8v and it’s a lovely place to sit, good quality/solid and practical, way nicer than my previous cars (other Audi, BMW, Porsche, VW). I must be missing something.

I'll be looking for something similar in a few months. Hopefully in the same colour too. Just perfect to my pension age eyes!!

I had a 2015 S3 Saloon manual, and thought it was a good, but not great car.

When the RS3 Saloon came out I had high hopes. Sadly it was DSG only. I had hoped they might have introduced a manual. If they had I would have upgraded. The RS3 Saloon always reminds me of the B7 RS4 Saloon.

But then again, the RS3 is a good, but not great car either. But as a daily, it's a great car to own.

I think they're referring to the interior in the latest version

I had a couple of 8P Audi S3's, a T and an 03 Reg, this reminds me lookswise of them, as they were understated with only the alloys and (optional) chrome mirrors the main giveaway.

I think my money would still go on an S3 hatch as I personally prefer the image, although this does look great in an understated way...

A local lad had one of these in green, went like a rocket. He uploaded a video of it at the Nurburgring hitting very high speeds!
I agree they definitely look better as a saloon.
I love the fact this one has clear glass and silver wheels.

Same and I'm not really a saloon man. I've always wanted to try/experience the engine in these though for sure.

Basic spec, and overdue some key service work; I'll bet you worn original (expensive) brakes too.

Probably need to spend a bit more to secure something good.

So 3 services in 6 years and 47,000 miles... hmmm

Is this because it's first service is only after 3 years, then annual after that? For a car that may have been on a lease and driven by a complete wally, that seems like a recipe for trouble...

If you buy one from new and do an oil change in the first 3 years do you invalidate the warrany?

Nah, the B5 RS4 will always be the best looking IMO. In side profile, the 'waist' of this RS3 is too high and the glass area looks a bit squashed to my eye

These have held onto their value well and are expensive now for a 6 year old car. By comparison, a quick Autotrader scan brings up several similar mileage and aged BMW M2s for £30k or under. That's where my money would go.

No oil change in 3 years in a performance car?
Couldn't buy one used, you'd never know if it was about to explode if the previous owner drove it like a tt.
