Hi - i'm just about to put an order in for a new car (via salary sacrifice). Its a Genesis GV60 and the only thing left to do before pulling the trigger is decide on colour. My wife likes the metallic grey and i preferred the matte version. My question is, has anyone had / got any exoerience good or bad of having matte paint.

(Nb -i did add a comment on the GV60 post in the EV section, but realise that its somewhat limited my reach as far as responses so i thought i'd go with a stand alone post)

thanks

BMW used to do a 'Frozen' paint which was basically a Matt finish, the advice was

Do not polish or wax the vehicle.
Do not use mechanical means of cleaning the surface.
Remove insect remains, tar and other residues immediately.
Always keep your paint protected.

To be honest I don't like Matt paint and I suspect it will be a pain to look after.

I have the shooting star matte paint on our Ioniq 5. Looks great when clean.

As you've been informed, you should avoid car washes at all costs and generally use matte-specific products. Also don't assume dealers know this, or how to treat the paint specially. Get a sign e.g. 'DONT WASH'!

I use the Chemical Guys - Meticulous Matte Shampoo and detailer. I got a good deal on 5L of each on ebay.

Not paint, but we have two cars with a matte wrap which requires the same care as paint. As has been said, you obviously can't polish it etc. but aside from that, the Chemical Guys matte shampoo is the way to go with it. They do also sell a matte detailer spray which is supposed to add a layer of protection but I haven't really bothered with that and it's a bit fiddly to put on/take off correctly compared to a decent wax on a smooth finish.

I don't find it takes any extra care apart from that in terms of maintaining the finish, plus hides general dirt better than a normal finish.

Good mate of mine has a Mercedes C63S with a matte grey paint from factory, it looks amazing in my opinion but we were away on a driving holiday last week and he said a lot of bodyshops don't want to touch it for repairs because it's extremely labour intensive and time consuming, he wanted to get the front end resprayed to clean up stone chips but has now decided he will live with the stone chips instead, he has said if he had bought it from new he would have had a paint protection film fitted.

If I really wanted the matte finish then I'd go for the standard colour and put a matte PPF over the top - Same effect, easier to maintain and it can be removed relatively easily.
I read a few reviews of owners having very expensive repairs to the Ioniq 5 with the matte paint options, I'm guessing it's much harder to blend and the paint itself is much less forgiving. Too much of a PITA from what I can see.

I have matte paint.

I wash it the same way as I've always done, using mostly the same products and methods as I have always done.

I use a spray on / hose off protective coat as I've always done.

I leave mud/dirt and bird crap the same length of time as I've always done.

The only thing that has changed is I don't polish, wet sand or wax it.

More detailing BS and hype for the most part.. matte paint really isn't that hard to live with or difficult to deal with.

I had a frozen silver M3 did nearly 40,000 miles with it, general cleaning isn't an issue just use the matt paint stuff you can get wax/wash/cleaner fluid the issues come if it needs to have any paint and in my experience they can't get the finish right when re-spraying the panels.

On the plus side you'll never see any swirls!
