Porsche cayenne 3.0td vs 4.2

S Diesel is a great car…the V8 is more like a turbine than a diesel engine, very smooth.
My S Diesel does 30 mpg comfortably…with cruise set to low 70’s it’ll do 35 mpg. I get about 30 mpg overall which is mostly country roads and duel carriageway/motorway. If I do a lot of driving in town I’d say overall it gets down to 28 mpg.
Transfer box is the only major issue you hear about. Mine has had a couple of other things….immobiliser and there was an issue with the Air PASM but I’ve had the car six years and done 120k miles. All fixed with little to no fuss by OPC under warranty. Just extended the warranty for another four years as can’t extend warranty once they get over 125k miles.
If the choice is lower spec/higher miles and V8 I wouldn’t think twice.

‘Better’ is a bit subjective depending on your wants and needs. I have the 4.2d but have driven a 3.0d. There is a performance difference and the v8 sounds nice but the 3.0d was still a nice thing. When looking (some time ago) the specs vary widely so choose wisely. Mine has never gone wrong and no extra costs over and above service/maintenance. I know the transfer box issue is a known fault. Mine has been fine but the servicing dealer changed the box oil at the last service (recall so not charged). Mine does close to 40mpg average on the motorway. Pan roof,18 way seats and air suspension are great. Don’t have the flash stereo but the standard one is fine.

I’m sure the V8 is the better engine, but don’t dismiss the 3.0 V6. I’ve had three and no issues engine wise. Had a compressor fail last year on the air suspension but fixed under (extended) warranty. Economy over meant thousands averages 33mpg.
Towing a horse box may favour the torque of the V8, of course.

I’ve a 3.0td which I’ve had for 6 years now from new. I wouldn’t rule it out, it is surprisingly powerful and pulls well, as well as being insanely frugal for a big car. I used to do a 340 mile motorway round trip each week an could get up to 45mpg at legal speeds. No problems at all in that time, but I guess I’ve jinxed that now! It’s a surprising keeper, as they don’t make them any more I’m keeping this one.
